Follow live reaction as West Ham fell to a 2-1 home defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final. West Ham’s first European semi-final in 46 years got off to a nightmare start - as Ansgar Knauff arrived late at the back post to head Eintracht Frankfurt ahead after just 48 seconds.

The hosts kept their composure and scored a deserved equaliser through Michail Antonio, after Jarrod Bowen had hit the post, and the striker stretched to steer Kurt Zouma’s knock-down over the line from a set-piece.

But it would be Eintracht Frankfurt who struck the next blow, as Daichi Kamada’s goal saw the visitors retake the lead as he eventually finished off a slick move through the West Ham defence. West Ham were frustrated in the closing stages, with Kamada coming closest as his shot deflected off Craig Dawson and onto the post.

And in stoppage time Bowen rattled the underside of the crossbar with a spectacular overhead kick as Frankfurt held on for the first-leg victory. It leaves West Ham with work to do in Germany next week. Relive the action from West Ham vs Eintracht Frankfurt, below:

West Ham with work to do as Daichi Kamada hands Eintracht Frankfurt first-leg advantage

Among the 3,000 Eintracht Frankfurt fans in the London Stadium on Thursday night, amid the boisterous bouncing, choreographed flag-waving and songs of serenade for their players, one supporter gripped a flare tightly. If it was a symbolic warning sign, it was not one heeded quickly enough by West Ham.

FT: West Ham 1-2 Eintracht Frankfurt

Full-time: That’s it. Eintracht Frankfurt have earned themselves a 2-1 lead ahead of the second leg in Germany in seven days time.

A 49-second opener from Ansgar Knauff gave the visitors the perfect start when he headed home from close range.

Michail Antonio levelled things up midway through the first half, tapping in after Kurt Zouma headed a free-kick back across the goal.

But nine minutes into the second half Daichi Kamada netted the decisive goal, scoring a rebound after a silky move from the German side.

Still getting over that Bowen attempt. Deserved a goal.

West Ham 1-2 Eintracht Frankfurt

90+1 mins: OH MY LORD! THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE GOAL OF THE SEASON!

Rice clips an inswinging cross into the middle and Jarrod Bowen’s overhead kick crashes off the crossbar and bounces down in front of the line!

Would have been an utterly incredible goal.

West Ham then swing in a corner but Soucek heads over.

West Ham 1-2 Eintracht Frankfurt

89 mins: CHANCE! Oh, there’s the opportunity. Rice clips it cleverly over the top for Benrahma. He sends the ball into the middle and Bowen climbs highest but can only head over the bar.

The referee deemed it to have come off a Frankfurt player last but it didn’t. The subsequent corner is easily dealt with.

Was that West Ham’s last chance? They may have to settle for needing a win in Germany.
