From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The January transfer window is nearing its climax with Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and more expected to be busy before the deadline.

Alexis Sanchez is finally a Manchester United player and made his debut as his new side swept aside Yeovil on Friday night. Jose Mourinho isn't stopping there though with a new central midfielder now on his shopping list. Arsenal are bedding Henrikh Mkhitaryan in but Arsene Wenger is keen to add at least one more new face before the window shuts with deals for Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and West Brom's Jonny Evans set to go down to the wire.

Manchester City are closing in on a new central defender with Athletic Bilbao's Aymeric Laporte set to arrive imminently while Chelsea's search for a new striker continues with talks over Roma's Edin Dzeko ongoing. Could Arsenal's Olivier Giroud arrive instead before the month is out?

We will have all the latest news throughout the day right here.

New signing Ross Barkley could make his first Chelsea start in Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round tie with Newcastle due to a number of attacking injuries.

Midfielder Cesc Fabregas (hamstring) returned to training on Friday and could feature, but striker Alvaro Morata (back) and playmaker Willian (hamstring) are out.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois remains sidelined, so Willy Caballero is expected to continue.

Luke Shaw has praised Alexis Sanchez as “one of the best in the world” after Manchester United’s new signing took part in his first training session with the team.

The Chilean finally completed his move to Old Trafford on Monday and is in line to make his debut for the club against Yeovil Town in the FA Cup on Friday night.

He began training with the club this week – and it’s safe to say full-back Shaw was impressed with the 29-year-old’s ability.

Alan Pardew has been discussing Jonny Evans' future at West Brom.

Arsenal are the front-runners to sign the Northern Irishman with Manchester City now focusing their attentions on Aymeric Laporte at Athletic Bilbao.

The Baggies boss insists no offer has been made - yet - but they would be willing to sell.

"The Arsenal deal is paper talk, someone has released that and it's not true. Jonny is still at the football club and we've not had a bid put to us which is anywhere near acceptable.

"We might sell if the price is right. We’ve had a couple of enquiries of what we would be looking for, and the answer has been ‘we're not gonna tell you’.

"You make a bid and you'll get some gauge. We don’t really want to sell Jonny but we’ll see."

Pep Guardiola has promised that Manchester City will not abandon the FA Cup in the way that Manuel Pellegrini was forced to.

Guardiola is facing an increasingly tough task in managing City’s progress through four competitions.

His predecessor Pellegrini effectively had to sacrifice the FA Cup two seasons ago in order to maintain a challenge for the Champions League, the League Cup and a top-four Premier League finish.

The Chilean picked a side made up largely of fringe players and academy graduates for a fifth-round tie at Chelsea, played three days before a Champions League away match against Dynamo Kiev, and ended up losing 5-1.

Guardiola said that he understood why Pellegrini made that decision – with City going on to reach the Champions League semi-finals – but feels City are better equipped to focus with the challenges they now face.

Jurgen Klopp has been quizzed about the rest of Liverpool's window.

He's not anticipating any more new faces.

"It's not really likely. Should I say '100% no'? That would kill all the rumours, and I don't want to do that, come on! We have another four or five days to enjoy!”

We have a done deal.

West Ham have announced the signing of Joao Mario on loan from Inter Milan.

And they've done it in style too. Lovely stuff.

He'll wear No 18.

Another done deal you lucky things, this time from the Championship.

Darren Bent has left Derby for Burton Albion.

The former Ipswich, Charlton, Tottenham, Sunderland, Aston Villa, Fulham and Brighton veteran has signed a short term deal until the end of the season.

Rafael Benitez has told Brighton to forget signing striker Aleksandar Mitrovic this month even if they do come up with the asking price.

The Magpies are currently locked in a battle to land Feyenoord frontman Nicolai Jorgensen in a bid to strengthen their Premier League survival hopes, and could be prepared to listen to offers for the Serbia international, who has indicated his intention to leave Tyneside this month, if they succeed.

Brighton are understood to have tested the water with a bid of around £7million, less than half what Newcastle paid Anderlecht for Mitrovic in July 2015, but Benitez is determined he will not be sold to a relegation rival whatever the offer.

He said: "It was clear to him and his agent, if we can bring a striker in then we can consider anything - apart from the Premier League. If we can't bring in a striker, then we have to consider carefully because we need players.

"I see the press that Brighton offered £7million or £8million, but we are not considering selling a player to a Premier League team. That will not make sense.

"We have to manage the players we have. It doesn't matter how much teams offer in the Premier League because we can't consider offers if we don't buy the players."

Antonio Conte kept his counsel on Chelsea's transfer policy as the head coach hinted Ross Barkley would make his full debut in Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round tie with Newcastle.

Following Wednesday night's Carabao Cup semi-final loss at Arsenal, Conte did little to hide his frustration at a lack of recruitment, with Barkley's £15m purchase from Everton on January 5 the only incoming player so far this month.

Conte said on Wednesday: "The club decide our transfer market. From the summer, the club decides every single player."

Asked whether any arrivals can be anticipated, Conte took his usual stance to defer to the club.
