‘I hope Ronaldo stays’: United’s Casemiro urges friend to remain at Old Trafford

The transfer window closed with a flurry of late activity, as Chelsea signed the former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on a two-year deal from Barcelona. Aubameyang, who will wear the number 9 shirt at Stamford Bridge, was finally announced after midnight and was followed by the loan signing of midfielder Denis Zakaria from Juventus as Chelsea’s busy summer of transfer business concluded with two major deals.

Liverpool signed Arthur on loan from Juventus to ease their midfield injury problems but Arsenal‘s late chase of Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz ended in disappointment. Arsenal saw three bids rejected, the last around £25m, with Aston Villa holding out for £40m for a player out of contract next summer.

Earlier, Manchester United completed the signing of Antony from Ajax for €100m in the biggest deal of transfer deadline day. The Brazilian international has put pen to paper on a contract at Old Trafford that runs until 2027, and was followed by goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who has joined on a season-long loan from Newcastle.

Elsewhere, Manuel Akanji sealed his move to Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund on a five-year deal while Leicester made their first outfield signing of the window as they announced the arrival of Belgium international Wout Faes from Reims. He replaces Wesley Fofana, who joined Chelsea for £70m on Wednesday.

Follow all the latest twists and turns on transfer deadline day below.

“I’m happy to be back in the Premier League again. I’m more experienced now and I think I can help the Club.”

Everton seal James Garner signing from Manchester United in potential £15m deal

Everton have completed the signing of James Garner from Manchester United for a fee rising to £15 million.

The 21-year-old became Frank Lampard’s second midfield signing of deadline day, after Idrissa Gueye returned to the club from Paris Saint-Germain, and has signed a four-year deal at Goodison Park.

Garner, who helped Nottingham Forest win promotion during a loan spell at the City Ground last season, has cost an initial £9 million and believes Lampard can improve his game.

He has also become United’s biggest sale in a summer when they have spent over £200 million on signings such as Antony, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia.

Jadon Sancho goal enough to beat Leicester as Man United earn third straight win

As the building blocks of one managerial tenure are carefully laid in place, those of another perhaps begin to come apart. Manchester United are up to the nosebleed territory of fifth - a height barely thinkable at the beginning of last week - after this 1-0 victory over bottom-of-the-league Leicester City, courtesy of an excellent first-half team goal finished off by Jadon Sancho. The only comfort to Brendan Rodgers will be that his opponents for the evening were in a similar position until recently.

It is difficult to escape the sense that whereas one of these clubs is at the beginning of their journey, the other is in danger of reaching an end. It is not since his time with Swansea City that Rodgers has lost four consecutive Premier League games. Expectations were not as great back then, and even if he can point to a lack of investment in the summer market, with the last-minute £15m acquisition of Wout Faes the only significant arrival, results are desperately needed.

Perhaps most worryingly of all for Leicester, United did not have to be particularly good to take all three points, or even rely on the players rushed in since losing their opening games of the campaign. Erik ten Hag’s third successive win was comfortable for the most part, with even Leicester’s brief attempts at a second half surge dealt with and contained. All three victories have come by a single goal. There is work to do. But the trajectory is unmistakably upward.
