Goals by Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford were the inevitable difference between two dysfunctional teams who had both been in crisis, but with one spending an awful lot more than the other.

That is what has again spared Ole Gunnar Solskjaer immediate pressure, as he once more got a win just when all seemed lost. That will see all focus now go on Nuno Espirito Santo - and, judging by this crowd, Daniel Levy - after an utterly dismal 3-0 defeat.

That was what was really predictable.

It was not just that Solskjaer got the win he always tends to in such situations. It was that the predictability of Spurs’ tepid approach made it a certainty. United could willingly look on White Hart Lane and be glad they don’t have those problems.

While the travelling supporters offered their usual show of support to Solskjaer regardless of circumstances, that really wasn’t the case from the home fans.

The boos just got louder as the game went on, to the point they became deafening, and culminating in shouts that the manager didn’t know what he was doing and that Daniel Levy should follow him out of the club.

Tottenham 0-0 Man United

4 mins: The reasoning behind that might have just been illustrated by an aimless ball from Dier as Tottenham looked to build. If United look to sit deep, it could be a challenge for this Tottenham side to break them down.

Tottenham 0-0 Man United

3 mins: After a busy opening minute, Spurs are the first team to settle and knock some passes together. United are looking to drop off early when they lose possession, after their press was so ineffective against Liverpool last weekend.

Tottenham 0-0 Man United

1 min: It is loud at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, in what is their first home fixture for a few weeks. Varane has lined up in the middle of Maguire and Lindelof in United’s back three.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

With a lot of the attention on Manchester United and Solskjaer, it’s easy to forget that Nuno Espirito Santo is under plenty of pressure himself today after they slipped to a fourth Premier League defeat of the season last weekend to West Ham.

Ben Davies and Giovani Lo Celso come into the side, in place of Sergio Reguilon and Tanguy Ndombele, but Spurs need to improve following some lacklustre performances in recent weeks.

“We’ve been up and down, we’ve been close, we’ve been far, but always with the ideas,” Nuno tells Sky Sports. “We need to add many things; creativity, mobility, better finishing, better passing. It’s a chance [to do that] today.”

On TV, Roy Keane is lamenting Manchester United’s “lack of character” in the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool last weekend, going on to say Harry Maguire was a “robot” in his interviews after the match (he then went on to impersonate the ‘robot’).

Solskjaer has responded to the criticism this week by handing a start to Edinson Cavani and bringing Raphael Varane back into the side in place of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

It will bring a change of formation for United, presumably to 3-4-1-2, with Bruno Fernandes behind Cavani and Ronaldo. It’s bold, but will it pay off?

Full time: Liverpool 2-2 Brighton

Brighton’s Leandro Trossard, after scoring the equaliser in his side’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool: "I think we started off poor in the first half but after they scored their second we came back into it.

"We got our goal and believed a lot more. What a good game, we could have won it as well, it's such fine margins but we're really happy with a draw.

"You come to Anfield, any point you can take off them feels really good. We had fighting spirit. It was such a big game for us so to get the draw here almost feels like a win. We need to keep building on this, I think we've been brilliant."

It’s been a brilliant day of Premier League action so far and the game of the day is arguably yet to come.

We head over to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium now for coverage of the evening match between Spurs and Manchester United, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to fight back after last weekend’s thrashing to Liverpool.

The United manager has come out firing with a bold formation switch as he looks to keep himself in the job - we’ll have full build-up and reaction from the other Premier League games ahead of kick-off at 5:30pm.

FULL TIME! Liverpool 2-2 Brighton

While Liverpool had the better of the overall attempts, as well as possession and completed passes, Brighton carried the greater threat and had more shots on target and expected goals than the hosts at Anfield.

A second consecutive win at Anfield would not have been undeserved.
