Goals by Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford were the inevitable difference between two dysfunctional teams who had both been in crisis, but with one spending an awful lot more than the other.

That is what has again spared Ole Gunnar Solskjaer immediate pressure, as he once more got a win just when all seemed lost. That will see all focus now go on Nuno Espirito Santo - and, judging by this crowd, Daniel Levy - after an utterly dismal 3-0 defeat.

That was what was really predictable.

It was not just that Solskjaer got the win he always tends to in such situations. It was that the predictability of Spurs’ tepid approach made it a certainty. United could willingly look on White Hart Lane and be glad they don’t have those problems.

While the travelling supporters offered their usual show of support to Solskjaer regardless of circumstances, that really wasn’t the case from the home fans.

The boos just got louder as the game went on, to the point they became deafening, and culminating in shouts that the manager didn’t know what he was doing and that Daniel Levy should follow him out of the club.

Tottenham 0-1 Man United

41 mins: It would be a stretch to say the goal had been coming by United had been the better team over the previous 10-15 minutes.

But that stunning Ronaldo goal has lit up what had been a poor match up until that point.

GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Man United (RONALDO 39’)

WOW - what a goal from Ronaldo! It’s stunning finish. Fernandes drifts a inch-perfect pass over the Spurs defence which Ronaldo meets on the full volley. He sends the shot across Lloris and into the net. As good as it gets.

Tottenham 0-0 Man United

37 mins: Play is brought back for a late challenge from McTominay on Lo Celso. This has not been pretty but United do look like they are battling for their manager.

Tottenham 0-0 Man United

35 mins: Brilliant from Wan-Bissaka to chase back and block Son’s shot - although the Spurs forward might have been offside. Spurs beat the United line with a ball slipped through to the forward, who raced clear only to see his shot denied by the recovering full-back.

Tottenham 0-0 Man United

32 mins: Ronaldo is clattered by Dier after receiving the ball with his back to goal.

Moments later Fred lets fly when he had Shaw open to his left. It’s a great strike, swerving towards the far post, and Lloris has to leap to punch it wide.

United’s corner comes to nothing after the ball breaks to Fernandes and his cross back in evades everyone.

Tottenham 0-0 Man United

30 mins: United work the ball out wide to Wan-Bissaka, who is United’s free man, but his pull back evades everyone. Ronaldo recovers it out on the wing but his delivery comes to nothing. United keep the play alive and it leads to Ronaldo lining up a shot at the back post, but Romero steals in to win the ball back.

NO GOAL! Tottenham 0-0 Man United

27 mins: Tottenham think they’ve scored through Romero but the flag eventually goes up for offside! It’s a late one, but the right decision. Dier won the ball following the corner and glanced it on to the back post, where Romero bundled it in. He was a yard offside, at least.

Tottenham 0-0 Man United

26 mins: Spurs win a corner after good work from Son on the right. Varane gets out to block his cross.

Tottenham 0-0 Man United

25 mins: Another chance, this time for United! They break forward, with Shaw finding Fernandes. He’s sent slightly wide by the ball, which if played towards goal could have led to a clear chance, but Fernandes whips in a cross from the right that is met by Cavani. His header drifts wide of the post and he looks as if he knows he could have done better.

Tottenham 0-0 Man United

23 mins: Chance! Lo Celso’s free kick was hit straight into the all but Skipp salvages the play, laying it back to Lucas who chips it over the top to Son. The ball bounces up in Son’s path and he went for the chip - but it wasn’t really on and it lands on the top of the net.
