World Cup spot is "guaranteed" says Portugal coach Santos despite Serbia shock

Scotland boosted their hopes of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a memorable 2-0 win over group-winners Denmark on Monday evening.

The Danes had won all nine of their qualifiers and already booked their place in Qatar ahead of the clash at Hampden Park, but it was Steve Clarke’s side who were on the front foot from the outset. The Scots were seeking a sixth successive victory and deservedly found the breakthrough 10 minutes before half-time when a well-worked corner saw Liam Cooper nod the ball back for John Souttar to head home from close range. Denmark struggled to conjure up any clear-cut openings, with Andreas Cornelius coming closest from a header smartly saved by Craig Gordon – although the flag later went up for an earlier offside.

The visitors pressed for an equaliser in the second half but could not find a way through a resilient Scotland defence. Andreas Skov Olsen tested Gordon in the 83rd minute as his low shot was parried away, then substitute Mikael Uhre failed to make proper contact with the ball when it bounced down in front of him inside the Scotland box, his effort gathered by Scotland’s No1.

Scotland’s three points were sealed moments later when Che Adams was played through by Southampton teammate Stuart Armstrong and the Saints striker swept home beyond the despairing dive of Kasper Schmeichel. The victory means Scotland will now be seeded for the World Cup play-offs next March, and they will host their semi-final fixture.

Follow all the post-match reaction from Scotland vs Denmark below.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

23 mins: HUGE CHANCE!

Oh, what a move from Scotland. A lovely dinked ball finds Gilmour. He cuts it back for Christie who bundles it into the path of Adams but the Southampton man is denied by the outstretched leg of Schmeichel!

Superb stop. Great play from the Scots.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

23 mins: YELLOW! Denmark keeper Schmeichel has gone in the book, the first card of the night.

It seems it was for descent after he berated the referee, indicating he needs glasses when a goal kick/corner decision did not go his way. Silly boy.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

21 mins: McGinn swings in the corner which is on top of Schmeichel but headed clear inside the six yard box for another corner.

This one comes in from Gilmour but the referee has seen an infringement from a Scottish player.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

20 mins: Christie tries to make something happen as he drives down the right of the penalty area but his cross is headed clear.

Adams then latches onto a loose ball and shrugs off Kjaer to earn his side a corner.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

17 mins: CLOSE! Chelsea centre-back Andreas Christensen lines one up from 25 yards and let’s fly. It initially looks dangerous but ends up soaring just over the top.

We know he can hit them. Remember that one in the Euros?

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

14 mins: After a very dominant opening seven or eight minutes, Scotland are now reverting to their defensive shape as Denmark start to ping it around.

If Steve Clarke’s side are going to get a positive result then they need to be patient because there will be spells without the ball.

Maehle skips away as a bit of room opens up behind Scotland. Eventually the hosts are able to snuff him out on the edge of the box but there was another warning sign.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

11 mins: Chance for Denmark! They’re getting a bit of space all of a sudden, the visitors.

Larsen clips a ball from the right in towards Wass but his header drifts wide of the post.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

9 mins: Denmark get their foot on the ball for the first time. It’s intricate play down the left from Maehle who finds Olsen only for him to slip and see the ball roll out of play.

The Scots loving that.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

7 mins: McGinn fouled again by Vestergaard as Scotland enjoy a large amount of possession in the Denmark half in the opening minutes of this game.

Worth mentioning the referee tonight has dished out 18 yellow cards in his last two La Liga games.

Expect bookings then.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

5 mins: Scotland captain Robertson controls a long ball from McGinn wonderfully well but is penalised for using his arm. Harsh.

Robertson and McGinn starting well down the left, probing that side.
