World Cup spot is "guaranteed" says Portugal coach Santos despite Serbia shock

Scotland boosted their hopes of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a memorable 2-0 win over group-winners Denmark on Monday evening.

The Danes had won all nine of their qualifiers and already booked their place in Qatar ahead of the clash at Hampden Park, but it was Steve Clarke’s side who were on the front foot from the outset. The Scots were seeking a sixth successive victory and deservedly found the breakthrough 10 minutes before half-time when a well-worked corner saw Liam Cooper nod the ball back for John Souttar to head home from close range. Denmark struggled to conjure up any clear-cut openings, with Andreas Cornelius coming closest from a header smartly saved by Craig Gordon – although the flag later went up for an earlier offside.

The visitors pressed for an equaliser in the second half but could not find a way through a resilient Scotland defence. Andreas Skov Olsen tested Gordon in the 83rd minute as his low shot was parried away, then substitute Mikael Uhre failed to make proper contact with the ball when it bounced down in front of him inside the Scotland box, his effort gathered by Scotland’s No1.

Scotland’s three points were sealed moments later when Che Adams was played through by Southampton teammate Stuart Armstrong and the Saints striker swept home beyond the despairing dive of Kasper Schmeichel. The victory means Scotland will now be seeded for the World Cup play-offs next March, and they will host their semi-final fixture.

Follow all the post-match reaction from Scotland vs Denmark below.

GOAL! Scotland 2-0 Denmark (Adams, 86)

86 mins: SCOTLAND DOUBLE THEIR LEAD!

McGinn finds Armstrong and the Saints man finds his club teammate Che Adams who makes no mistake, sweeping beyond Kasper Schmeichel and into the corner!

Jubilant scenes at Hampden Park. That should be that!

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

85 mins: OH MY GOODNESS! It’s pinball in the Scotland box but eventually falls for Uhre six yards out and the Denmark man can only half connect with the ball as it kindly rolls into the arms of Gordon.

HAD TO SCORE!

HANG ON...

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

83 mins: GOOD SAVE! The corner is headed away but Olsen rifles it back in with a venom and Gordon parries away when the ball seemed to be bobbling towards the bottom corner.

Everyone inside the Scotland half now. It’s attack vs defence.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

82 mins: Into the last 10 minutes we go as Denmark’s press for an equaliser appears to have tapered off following a number of changes and breaks in play.

Tierney flicks a cross away for a Danish corner. Fatigue setting in. Not long to go.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

80 mins: Scotland captain Andy Robertson has gone down here. A concern for the country and for Liverpool.

SUBS! Robertson hobbles off and is replaced by Scott McKenna. Ryan Christie has also gone off for Stuart Armstrong.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

78 mins: Che Adams has been magnificent at holding the ball up for Scotland tonight and giving them an outlet high up the pitch. But his legs are starting to tire now and he is dropping deeper as a result. The Scottish defenders no longer have that long pass option and are subsequently welcoming pressure.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

76 mins: Scotland cannot get out of their own half now. It’s going to be a backs to the wall-type job for the final 15 minutes as Denmark continue to stalk their prey.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

74 mins: It’s neat build-up play in the middle third from Denmark but as soon as Kristensen looks for that killer pass it’s so poor.

SUB! That is Gilmour’s last moments in the game as Kenny McLean comes on in his place.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

72 mins: Denmark having a lot of the ball now but not doing much with it. Here comes another substitution.

Uhre is on for striker Cornelius. The Danish forward has had very little to feed off of tonight.

Meanwhile, Billy Gilmour looks like he has cramp. He is going to continue for the time being.
