World Cup spot is "guaranteed" says Portugal coach Santos despite Serbia shock

Scotland boosted their hopes of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a memorable 2-0 win over group-winners Denmark on Monday evening.

The Danes had won all nine of their qualifiers and already booked their place in Qatar ahead of the clash at Hampden Park, but it was Steve Clarke’s side who were on the front foot from the outset. The Scots were seeking a sixth successive victory and deservedly found the breakthrough 10 minutes before half-time when a well-worked corner saw Liam Cooper nod the ball back for John Souttar to head home from close range. Denmark struggled to conjure up any clear-cut openings, with Andreas Cornelius coming closest from a header smartly saved by Craig Gordon – although the flag later went up for an earlier offside.

The visitors pressed for an equaliser in the second half but could not find a way through a resilient Scotland defence. Andreas Skov Olsen tested Gordon in the 83rd minute as his low shot was parried away, then substitute Mikael Uhre failed to make proper contact with the ball when it bounced down in front of him inside the Scotland box, his effort gathered by Scotland’s No1.

Scotland’s three points were sealed moments later when Che Adams was played through by Southampton teammate Stuart Armstrong and the Saints striker swept home beyond the despairing dive of Kasper Schmeichel. The victory means Scotland will now be seeded for the World Cup play-offs next March, and they will host their semi-final fixture.

Follow all the post-match reaction from Scotland vs Denmark below.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

51 mins: It’s a carnival atmosphere at Hampden Park right now. If they do win this game, Steve Clarke would become the first Scottish manager to win six games in a row since Alex McLeish.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

48 mins: Olsen tries to beat Tierney down the right but the Arsenal man is equal to it and it comes back off the Dane for a Scotland goal kick.

Been that sort of evening for the visitors so far...

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

46 mins: BACK UNDERWAY! Denmark begin the second half. They need to be much, much better if they want to maintain their 100 per cent record in the campaign.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

Second half incoming. Can the Scots hang on to the lead? I say hang on, if the first period is anything to go by they may feel like extending their advantage.

HALF-TIME: Scotland 1-0 Denmark

That will do for the first 45 minutes at Hampden Park. What a sensational performance from Scotland!

Steve Clarke side lead courtesy of a close-range header from John Souttar after an excellent nod back across goal from Liam Cooper.

Wonderful display so far from the Scots.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

45 mins: That was a chance for Denmark!

Olsen curls a ball towards the back post and it falls for Wass. The Dane’s effort is heading into the bottom corner but Tierney gets a flick on it to crucially divert it wide.

The visitors’ best chance of the game.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

44 mins: England might be 6-0 up against San Marino but it is here where the performance of the night is coming from. Scotland have been utterly irrepressible in this first period.

It’s just a matter of whether or not they can keep this intensity up.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

Here it is.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

42 mins: Denmark probe 40 yards from the Scotland goal but Robertson nicks the ball and the hosts can come away with it.

The Dane’s haven’t really laid a glove on Scotland over the last 20 minutes or so.

Clarke’s men professionally seeing this one out to the break.
