Tottenham Hotspur suffered their first defeat at their new stadium after Michail Antonio gave West Ham United a 1-0 win in the Premier League on Saturday.

Tottenham made a number of changes to their side as they prepared for their Champions League semi-final first leg against Ajax on Tuesday but Mauricio Pochettino's gamble backfired against a resolute West Ham side.

Spurs dominated the first half and could have been ahead after 11 minutes when Son Heung-min was played through by Dele Alli but his shot from the left was too close to the near post of Lukasz Fabianski who got down to save.

The Pole also did well to deny Christian Eriksen who shot from close range after good work down the right from Lucas Moura.

Tottenham were made to pay for those missed chances as West Ham took the lead after halftime. A lofted cross from Marko Arnautovic in the 67th minute found Antonio who lashed it in past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Relive the match above.

33 minutes

When he finally does pick up the ball he shows the necessity for early touches, Felipe Anderson spiriting free of Juan Foyth's shackles and in plenty of space for a diagonal but unable to retrieve a dramatically overhit pass from Antonio.

This game is just threatening to break wide open, both naturally attacking teams perhaps a little bored of the stalemate.

Issa Diop and Davinson Sanchez make vital interventions at either end as the last man.

Another good Spurs chance.

Issa Diop does well to get in the way of a Lucas Moura cross but hands the ball straight back to the home side trying to play out of his own box, the ball breaking Christian Eriksen's way in the space vacated by Diop.

Eriksen turns to find Lukasz Fabianski closing the space down smartly, firing against the Pole's chest from close range.

A couple of minutes later Fabianski saves similarly from Heung-Min Son after the South Korean capitalises on a heavy touch from Juan Foyth moving into the box, but Son is offside anyway.

Heung-Min Son has been lively but failed to find a telling finish in the first 40 minutes.

Arthur Masuaku beats Eric Dier one-on-one to open space for a cross, curling to close to Hugo Lloris who beats the ball away acrobatically.

Heung-Min Son has the chance to launch a one-man counter-attack as the ball spins to his feet, but takes much too long, Robert Snodgrass recovering well.

And for one of the smiliest men in football, that's a little naughty. Son leaves a bit on Snodgrass' foot as the Scotsman plays a pass. It isn't spotted by the officiating team. Careful.

The crowd asks for a foul as Dele Alli tumbles to deck after an apparent clip of the heels from Fabian Balbuena, but Anthony Taylor is unmoved ten yards behind the foul. He had a perfect view and contact was minimal at best.

Good decision.

At the other end Felipe Anderson releases a speculative shot from distance, a deflection off the rump of Toby Alderweireld nearly wrong-footing Hugo Lloris but in the end spinning safely into his grasp.

HALF TIME: Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

Harry Latham-Coyle27 April 2019 13:15

Stalemate.

It has been, generally, entertaining stuff through the first 45 minutes with both teams finding joy in forward areas, both perhaps lacking in quality when the chances have arisen, Tottenham particularly.

You sense that further chances will come in the second half as players tire in an open game, and Spurs will back Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura to capitalise on further opportunities behind a West Ham defence that looks vulnerable in that regard.

Harry Latham-Coyle27 April 2019 13:17

Manuel Pellegrini will be somewhat happy, though his side have failed to utilise Michail Antonio and Marko Arnautovic's attacking talents.

Felipe Anderson has been their brightest forward threat against Juan Foyth's relative inexperience on the right, but Spurs have had the clearer openings. West Ham very much in the fight, and they have options on the bench should the game remain tight as it wears.
