Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Maurizio Sarri makes his competitive debut as Chelsea manager as they take on Huddersfield Town on the opening weekend of the Premier League, with four games kicking-off at 3pm.

Chelsea will attempt to keep pace with Manchester United after they beat Leicester City on Friday night, but all eyes will be on their news manager Sarri as well as summer signing Jorginho who followed the manager from Napoli.

Two of the promoted clubs are also in action as Fulham take on Crystal Palace and Cardiff City travel to Bournemouth, while Watford host Brighton and Hove Albion. In the day’s late game, Wolves host a new-look Everton side at Molineux as the return to the top flight.

90 mins: GOAL! Bournemouth 2-0 Cardiff City (Callum Wilson)

Think I've given sides 1-0 down a bit of a curse here. This time it's Cardiff City the victim who concede in injury time thanks to a Wilson low drive, making up for his saved penalty earlier on

Jermaine Defoe on for Bournemouth in added time for his 18th season in the Premier League. He's scored in his last 17, not much time for him to get one this afternoon but who would bet against him to get a couple later in the season?

TEAM NEWS: Wolves vs Everton

Big day for Wolves as the Molineux hosts Premier League football once again. An even bigger game for these four debutants

Watford captain Troy Deeney speaking to BBC Sport after their 2-0 win over Brighton:

"We had a great start, got fans behind us early with our pressing which is what we aimed to do. To get the goals and Maxi having a tough year to put the work in nice to get the goals, two well-taken goals too.

"He’s not a bad player, he played in the Champions League final. People think we would fall apart because Richarlison left, this is a great squad. We’ve got Nathaniel Chalobah and Gerard Deulofeu to come back."
