Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Maurizio Sarri makes his competitive debut as Chelsea manager as they take on Huddersfield Town on the opening weekend of the Premier League, with four games kicking-off at 3pm.

Chelsea will attempt to keep pace with Manchester United after they beat Leicester City on Friday night, but all eyes will be on their news manager Sarri as well as summer signing Jorginho who followed the manager from Napoli.

Two of the promoted clubs are also in action as Fulham take on Crystal Palace and Cardiff City travel to Bournemouth, while Watford host Brighton and Hove Albion. In the day’s late game, Wolves host a new-look Everton side at Molineux as the return to the top flight.

Where will our first goal come from in the Premier League this afternoon? Cardiff City, many people's tip to go back down to the Championship will be keen to get on the scoresheet early on, away to Bournemouth today.

Right-back Lee Peltier has already picked up an early yellow card in that one.

Plenty of fans will be looking forward to seeing Ryan Sessegnon in the Premier League. He has made a decent start to the London derby fizzing a ball across the face of goal for Fulham, but Palace and Van Aanholt equal to it

With all the Premier League 3pm kick offs still goalless, most of the action is coming from Fulham vs Crystal Palace. Mitrovic has been denied by a good save from Hennessey, but Palace have had a couple of half chances too.

Deeney going close for Watford against Brighton, Ryan with the save. Watford having much of the better early possession there.

Someone get a goal in the Premier League, quick, if not we'll have to start rating the coaching staff...

24 mins: GOAL! Bournemouth 1-0 Cardiff City (Ryan Fraser)

Ryan Fraser gives Bournemouth the lead with a simple finish from 6 yards out! Cardiff carved open on the break, and that's not the start the Premier League newcomers will have been looking for.

David Luiz having a less than convincing start in Chelsea's opener against Huddersfield. He's survived a penalty shout, in what will be a key game for him as he looks to prove himself to new manager Maurizio Sarri.

With all the qualities to be a top, top player, too often he has been found wanting, and Christiansen will be waiting to pounce with the talented youngster on the bench today

Here's our man at FulhamEd Malyon, on the early action there:

"An interesting first half an hour at Craven Cottage, where Fulham have had more of the ball but only threatened occasionally while Crystal Palace have had the best chance of the game.

"Six new signings start for the Cottagers but there have been few signs of unfamiliarity and they look the same side that swaggered their way into the Premier League last season. For Palace, clearly looking to nick this one on the counter, it's been a classic Roy Hodgson away game so far."

PENALTY! Bournemouth have a penalty after Callum Wilson is felled...

SAVED! Callum Wilson steps up to take and Etheridge saves it!

34 mins: GOAL! Huddersfield 0-1 Chelsea N'Golo Kante

It's like waiting for buses...all the goals coming at once in the Premier League. Willian with good work on the left, Kante finds himself in the box gets on the end of the cross, hits it into the ground and it ends up in the net. Chelsea deservedly in the lead there.
