Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

England and Everton goalkepeer Jordan Pickford’s costly blunder allowed out-of-favour Divock Origi to carve his own piece of Merseyside history with a Liverpool winner deep into added time at Anfield.

The close-range goal 45 seconds before the end of four minutes of added time came after Virgil van Dijk’s hopelessly-sliced shot was shovelled onto the crossbar by Pickford when it appeared to be going out.

It was a harsh way to end the game for Pickford, who made at least one fantastic save in the first half, but it sparked wild scenes with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp charging into the centre-circle to celebrate with goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who himself had produced a couple of brilliant saves to keep another clean sheet.

Origi had played just 11 minutes as a substitute this season in the 2-0 Champions League defeat against Red Star Belgrade in Serbia and his long-term prospects look bleak.

But whatever happens over the coming months his goal for the 1-0 victory will be remembered for extending Everton’s wait for a win at Anfield into a 20th year as the hosts made it 10 wins and nine draws to keep the pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester City, whose lead was cut to two points again.

Welcome to our live coverage of Liverpool vs Everton, in the third installment on a day of derbies in the Premier League. To whet your appetite, here's Jack Pitt-Brooke on how Marco Silva got Everton firing again:

The teams are out of the tunnel and the final derby of the afternoon, the Merseyside Derby is about to take centre stage.

And we're underway with Everton kicking towards the Kop in the first half!

Anyone think the Toffees can surprise the odds this afternoon?

1 min: Early corner to Liverpool after Pickford's innocuously sliced clearance.

Cleared away.

4 mins: CHANCE EVERTON!

Complete silence in Anfield but I don't know if that's because of this chance.

Yerry Mina, who's last goal was for Colombia against England has just watched Digne swing in a wonderful free-kick and he beat Van Dijk to the header but saw his effort go inches wide.

Everyone seems to be confused by what's happened but what a chance that is to take an early lead!

Everton's 21st attempt in the 21st century to get a win at this ground, by the way.

None since 1999.

5 mins: Liverpool appealing for a backpass as Jordan Pickford catches the ball and the keeper did seem to be pondering the possibility but nothing given.

Good start by the Blues here.

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 16:21

7 mins: Mane slips in Alexander-Arnold who's cross is diverted well for a corner.

10 mins: Not as electric as the North London derby gone just before but at least that gives my fingers a bit of a rest.

As I say this Shaqiri bends a wonderful looking ball to the far post but Mane can't get there...

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 16:26

12 mins: Gomes gives the ball away in the middle of the pitch and Liverpool look to capitalise.

Salah dinks a super ball over the top for Mane and the Senegalese is having his shirt pulled by Mina but he lets go and Mane lets rip.

Sadly for Liverpool, he smashes it over.
