Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

England and Everton goalkepeer Jordan Pickford’s costly blunder allowed out-of-favour Divock Origi to carve his own piece of Merseyside history with a Liverpool winner deep into added time at Anfield.

The close-range goal 45 seconds before the end of four minutes of added time came after Virgil van Dijk’s hopelessly-sliced shot was shovelled onto the crossbar by Pickford when it appeared to be going out.

It was a harsh way to end the game for Pickford, who made at least one fantastic save in the first half, but it sparked wild scenes with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp charging into the centre-circle to celebrate with goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who himself had produced a couple of brilliant saves to keep another clean sheet.

Origi had played just 11 minutes as a substitute this season in the 2-0 Champions League defeat against Red Star Belgrade in Serbia and his long-term prospects look bleak.

But whatever happens over the coming months his goal for the 1-0 victory will be remembered for extending Everton’s wait for a win at Anfield into a 20th year as the hosts made it 10 wins and nine draws to keep the pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester City, whose lead was cut to two points again.

Re-live the action below:

13 mins: And another chance for Mane goes begging!

He beats Coleman to the ball but the Irishman recovers to block his shot.

Liverpool improving.

14 mins:

Robertson's header finds Salah in the box and the Egyptian king, at least he was last year, shows why he's lacking something.

His shot comes off his standing foot and he takes a complete air striker.

Absolutely hilarious (if you're not a Liverpool fan, that is.)

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 16:29

15 mins: Richarlison wins a cheap free-kick on the half way line to relieve the pressure on Everton's defence.

17 mins: CHANCE EVERTON!

Good football from Everton sees Richarlison break through the Liverpool defence but he just can't keep his footing.

The Liverpool fans boo thinking he's dived but I think he just couldn't keep his feet steady.

A good chance goes begging, though.

20 mins: HOW AREN'T EVERTON AHEAD?

Astonishing scenes here as Bernard's' cross is headed back across goal by Walcott into the path of Andre Gomes who's header is saved at point blank range by Alisson.

Gomez then saves the ball from going over the line and it somehow squirms away for a Liverpool goal-kick.

Should be ahead.

22 mins: Sigurdsson's free-kick is too deep but Everton look very dangerous going forward.

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 16:37

28 mins:

Firmino goes for a long range bending strike but Pickford is behind it and claims with relative ease.

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 16:44

29 mins:

And on the counter, Everton attack through Walcott who slides the ball through to the Brazilian, Richarlison.

As he shoots, Alexander-Arnold might catch him on the back of his leg but no foul is given.

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 16:45

32 mins: Shaqiri booked for a pretty clearly cynical foul on Bernard.

Liverpool can't get themselves going and Salah is dispossessed once again.

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 16:48

33 mins: CHANCE LIVERPOOL!

Fabinho wins the ball in the midfield and feeds Salah.

The Egyptian slides in Shaqiri who is bearing down on goal but he meets the pillar that is Jordan Pickford who blocks his shot.

Corner is cleared by Everton.
