Chelsea v Liverpool: Premier League match preview

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Champions League finalists Liverpool turn their attentions to domestic matters this afternoon as they travel to Chelsea in an attempt to secure their place in Europe’s top competition for another season.

A win for Chelsea will see them draw level on points with the Reds going into the final two games of the season, and they will back themselves to hunt Jurgen Klopp’s side down with their not-so-little distraction in the form of Real Madrid in Kiev.

Mohamed Salah is gunning for a record goal tally in a Premier League season having already scored 31, but is Chelsea’s defence up to the challenge?

Odds…

Chelsea: 11/8

Liverpool: 23/10

Draw: 13/5

Arsenal 2-0 Burnley

49: Burnley almost hit back.

Johann Gudmundsson stands a cross up to Sam Vokes in the middle and the forward heads it straight into Petr Cech's hands. That was a chance to start a comeback, either side of the goalkeeper and it's in.

Arsenal 3-0 Burnley

After some really nice build up play Sead Kolasinac takes Jack Wilshere's pass in his stride and fires a low shot across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner. Arsenal's build up play and ability to recycle possession there was brilliant.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

57: Chelsea have the ball in the back of the net but the flag is up. From a corner, Gary Cahill heads the ball into the six yard box where Antonio Rudiger taps in but from an offside position. The defender wheels away celebrating but the linesman correctly raises his flag for offside.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

64: Mohamed Salah is having a curiously quiet afternoon and is dropping deeper and deeper in an attempt to get involved. He's had just 22 touches, the lowest of any player that started. We all know he just needs one moment to change a game, so watch this space.

Arsenal 4-0 Burnley

Alex Iwobi

64: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has had an excellent game, cuts inside from the left wing and lays the ball to Alex Iwobi who slams the ball high into the top corner. What a strike, and what a performance this is turning out to be.

Nice touch

Arsenal 4-0 Burnley

67: Arsenal are playing some really good stuff in the final third and Burnley, who have made some great attacking sides look fairly ordinary, have had no answer to them. Arsenal very much deserve their four goal lead in Arsene Wenger's final home game in charge of Arsenal.

Arsenal 5-0 Burnley

Arsenal are running riot and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored again! Hector Bellerin, who like many in red is having a good game, cuts the ball back to Aubameyang who fires in. Arsenal are in complete control and you sense they are not done yet.

Farewell

Arsenal 5-0 Burnley

Per Mertesacker comes on and takes the armband as he makes his final appearance in an Arsenal shirt after a seven years at the club.
