Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Pep Guardiola’s resources are depleted with Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte both out injured, while Sergio Aguero has complained of exhaustion, but Gabriel Jesus and John Stones are both back and fully fit.
Bournemouth are struggling for form after such an impressive first half of the season, so a shock win against the champions would be a timely boost. Follow it live:

GOAL! Burnley 0-2 Crystal Palace (Michy Batshuayi, 48 minutes)
Big goal for Crystal Palace, consolidating their lead at the start of the second half.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross finds Michy Batshuayi who lashes home into the top corner.
Bournemouth 0-0 Manchester City, 47 minutes
More issues for Manchester City.
John Stones jogs off, perhaps ill, perhaps a niggle afflicting the centre-half.
Vincent Kompany is introduced.
Back underway in the second half at Molineux.
Wolves make a change as it begins, Diogo Jota replaced by Matt Doherty.
Manchester United 0-1 Southampton, 49 minutes
Another injury for Manchester United...
Alexis Sanchez has hardly effervesced today, but it is a mark of how thinly Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's quad is stretched that Diogo Dalot replaces the Chilean.
Ashley Young presumably on to the wing.
GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 Southampton (Andreas Pereira, 53 minutes)
Another superb goal!
Immediate impact from Diogo Dalot with an assist, but this one's all about the finish.
Andreas Pereira finds space 25 yards from goal and arcs the ball beautifully into the top corner, Angus Gunn utterly helpless as Manchester United level.
GOAL! Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester City (Riyad Mahrez, 55 minutes)
That's better from Manchester City, and they lead!
A scrappy finish, Riyad Mahrez kicking his effort into the floor rather after a goalmouth scramble but just about finding the bottom corner.
Big goal for City - Bournemouth were really frustrating them.
GOAL! Manchester United 2-1 Southampton (Romelu Lukaku, 59 minutes)
Manchester United have turned things around.
Little more than five minutes after equalising, Romelu Lukaku puts them ahead.
It's a top finish from the Belgian after his wasteful first half, moving the ball inside onto his right boot and rifling home in clinical fashion.
