"We will fight until the end" Pep on title race with Arsenal

Manchester City moved to within two points of league leaders Arsenal after seeing off Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon.

Included in the starting line-up for the third consecutive game Phil Foden shone for the hosts with a combination of fanciful footwork and an eye for goal which saw him open the scoring after 15 minutes. City then tried to dictate the tempo of the game but Newcastle created chances of their own.

Eddie Howe’s men have only scored three league goals since the turn of the year and that lack of confidence was on display as Sean Longstaff, Callum Wilson and Joelinton all let opportunites to score slip by. A trio of substitutes threatened to bring Newcastle back into the game in the second half but it was a City sub that dealt the knockout blow.

Bernardo Silva replaced Kevin De Bruyne and just two and a minutes after his introduction earned the hosts the second goal they were after. From their it was plain-sailing for Pep Guardiola’s men who have put the pressure on title rivals Arsenal ahead of their fixture with Bournemouth.

Relive the action as Man City defeated Newcastle in the early Premier League kick off:

Man City 1-0 Newcastle

57 mins: Ouch. Sean Longstaff and Nathan Ake come together in the air and Longstaff lands heavily on the deck. The referee lets play go on as Newcastle collect the loose ball.

Miguel Almiron dances inside from the right and slides a pass over Anthony Gordon who shoots and sees his effort rise well over the crossbar.

The referee then goes back and retrospectively books Ake for the challenge.

54 mins: Ruben Dias is hurried by Joelinton but releases the ball before getting hit by the Newcastle midfielder. Joelinton is booked for the late tackle and that brings his tally for the season up to 10 meaning he faces a two-game ban.

Miguel Almiron tries to nip in down the right but Nathan Ake scurries across to turn the ball behind for a corner.

Man City 1-0 Newcastle

51 mins: That’s sloppy from De Bruyne. He’s given the ball on the inside left channel and looks the play in Grealish on the overlap but overhits the pass and knocks it straight out of play.

Man City 1-0 Newcastle

48 mins: Newcastle win a free kick over on the right wing that Kieran Trippier curls into the Man City penalty area. Rodri rises above everyone else and heads the ball away.

The next goal in this game will be crucial. If Newcastle score it’s game on, if City it could be game over.

Jack Grealish weaves into the box from the left and goes down looking for a penalty but the referee isn’t interested.

No changes from either manager at the break as Newcastle get the match at the Etihad back underway. Can the visitors get themselves back into this game?

Newcastle have failed to win any games in the Premier League this season when they’ve conceded first. Eddie Howe’s men need to fight from behind against the champions if they want to win this game.

There’s a big second half coming up for the North East club.

Half-time: Man City 1-0 Newcastle

45+2 mins: A fine half of football comes to an end for Manchester City who take an advantage into the break thanks to Phil Foden’s opener.

Foden’s revival goes on and he could prove to be a vital asset for the latter stages of this campaign. Eddie Howe has some problems to solve.

Newcastle haven’t really been threatening and it probably won’t be too long before Allan Saint-Maximin is introduced.
