Manchester United vs Newcastle LIVE: Carabao Cup final result and reaction as Erik ten Hag wins first trophy
Manchester United 2-0 Newcastle: Casemiro header and Sven Botman own goal help United win first trophy in six years
Manchester United defeated Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final to win their first trophy in six years while ensuring the Magpies’ 68-year wait for a taste of domestic silverware continues.
A first half header from Casemiro opened the scoring before Marcus Rashford’s shot deflected off Sven Botman, beating stand-in Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius, to put Erik ten Hag’s side ahead at half time.
Newcastle had been the better team until Casemiro’s opener, with David de Gea producing an important stop to deny the excellent Allan Saint-Maximin, but Eddie Howe’s team could not find a response after the restart.
It means United lift their first piece of silverware since the Europa League in 2017 after Ten Hag steered the club to a trophy in his first season in charge. Newcastle were playing in their first cup final in 24 years, but a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United is the same result as their previous visit to Wembley in the 1999 FA Cup final.
Follow all the reaction from the Carabao Cup final as Manchester United defeated Newcastle at Wembley:
Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle
53 mins: Kieran Trippier is getting further and further forward for Newcastle. Already he’s put a couple of decent crosses into the box since the resumption.
The most recent almost picked out Callum Wilson’s high boot but Lisandro Martinez got his head to the ball first to deny a goalscoring chance.
Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle
51 mins: Aaron Wan-Bissaka does brilliantly to recover the ball high up the pitch. He’s got plenty of options on the left but decides to slip it into Weghorst to his right.
Weghorst lifts the ball into the penalty area where it gets blocked. There’s a half-hearted appeal for a handball from the striker but nothing comes from it.
Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle
48 mins: Manchester United have picked up where they ended the first half. Marcus Rashford lifts a cross into the box that Botman heads out as far as Antony.
He rolls the ball onto his left foot then curls a shot straight at Loris Karius who clings onto the ball.
Second half: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle
There’s a change from both managers at the break. Diogo Dalot is taken off to be replaced with Aaron Wan-Bissaka in a like-for-like swap at right-back.
Sean Longstaff is sacrificed for Newcastle in order to bring on another striker in Alexander Isak. Newcastle get the match back underway.
They’ve got 45 minutes to turn this final around.
HT Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle
Marcus Rashford will feel aggrieved as his goal has been credited as a Sven Botman own goal.
Botman is just the fourth player to score an own goal in a League Cup final after Roger Kenyon (1977), Gordon Chisholm (1985) and Steven Gerrard (2005).
HT Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle
Casemiro has scored four goals in his last 12 games in all competitions, one more goal than he had scored across his previous 89 matches.
HT Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle
Casemiro has led from the front for Manchester United today. His opening goal released the shackles and gave Erik ten Hag’s team a foothold in the game.
Marcus Rashford then added a second and United are in total control of this final.
Half-time: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle
45+5 mins: Joelinton is getting a little frustrated. He clatters Antony to the ground after the winger does a couple of tricks before yanking Casemiro to the floor and earning himself a yellow card.
The whistle goes for half-time and Manchester United have one hand on the Carabao Cup trophy. Work to do for Newcastle in the second half.
Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle
45+3 mins: Save! Antony nicks the ball off Burn deep in Man Utd’s half and back heels it down the wing. Wout Weghorst collects the ball and drives to the box.
There’s only Marcus Rashford up with him so Weghorst goes for goal and smokes a left-footed effort at goal from outside the box. It’s struck well and forces Loris Karius to leap to the right in order to palm it over the crossbar!
Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle
45 mins: There’s going to be five minutes of added time to play at the end of the first half.
Fred leaves a bit too much on Sean Longstaff when tackling him in the middle of the pitch. The Man Utd midfielder is already on a yellow card and needs to be a bit more careful.
Newcastle are awarded the free kick but Fred avoids further punishment.
