Manchester United 2-0 Newcastle: Casemiro header and Sven Botman own goal help United win first trophy in six years
Manchester United defeated Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final to win their first trophy in six years while ensuring the Magpies’ 68-year wait for a taste of domestic silverware continues.
A first half header from Casemiro opened the scoring before Marcus Rashford’s shot deflected off Sven Botman, beating stand-in Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius, to put Erik ten Hag’s side ahead at half time.
Newcastle had been the better team until Casemiro’s opener, with David de Gea producing an important stop to deny the excellent Allan Saint-Maximin, but Eddie Howe’s team could not find a response after the restart.
It means United lift their first piece of silverware since the Europa League in 2017 after Ten Hag steered the club to a trophy in his first season in charge. Newcastle were playing in their first cup final in 24 years, but a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United is the same result as their previous visit to Wembley in the 1999 FA Cup final.

77 mins: Botman boots a Newcastle clearance up the pitch and almost plays in Allan Saint-Maximin. David De Gea storms out of his penalty area and fizzes the ball into the stands in a no-nonsense clearance.
Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock are on for Newcastle. Saint-Maximin and Bruno Guimaraes have been taken off.

74 mins: Trippier is played in behind by Guimaraes and his square ball is flicked away by a lunging De Gea before the offside flag goes up.
Save! At the other end of the pitch Man Utd bomb forward on a counter-attack with Sabitzer playing Rashford in behind. Rashford smokes one at goal from 20-yards and forces Karius into a sharp save low down.

72 mins: Erik ten Hag makes some personnel and tactical changes now. Wout Weghorst and Fred are replaced with Marcel Sabitzer and Scott McTominay.
Those changes bring Marcus Rashford in the centre-forward role with Bruno Fernandes pushed out to the left. It’s a move designed to give United more control in midfield.

68 mins: Sven Botman picks up a yellow card for dissent and slamming the ball into the ground after Isak is penalised for a foul on Wan-Bissaka.
Chance! A long straight ball comes into Manchester United’s box and David De Gea punches the ball out to Joelinton. He flicks it onto his left foot and shoots but Wan-Bissaka blocks the effort.
Callum Wilson collects the ball and lays it back to Joelinton who shoots again but Martinez gets in front on this one and turns it wide of the target.
Good pressure from Newcastle.

65 mins: Kieran Trippier plays the corner short before getting the ball back and hooking it over to Sven Botman. Botman slides the ball back to Trippier but this time he loses possession to Lisandro Martinez.

Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak are being really positive, driving at the United defence and causing a few issues. Saint-Maximin wins Newcastle a corner.

59 mins: Bruno Guimaraes twists and weaves his way into the Manchester United box but runs into trouble and loses the ball. United send it out to Bruno Fernandes and Guiamaraes sprint across in an attempt to recover the ball.
He lunges into a tackle and rolls over on his right ankle. That’s a painful one and the Newcastle playmaker is down in pain again.

56 mins: Bruno Fernandes takes a short corner for Man Utd and slots the ball over to Luke Shaw about 20-yards out from goal. He flicks the ball into the middle of the box and finds Wout Weghorst who’s soft header is comfortably claimed by Karius.
The game is going to open up as Newcastle hunt for a way back into the match. Should they score it’ll create a beltin’ finish to this final.
