Manchester City secured their first Community Shield win since 2019, with Manuel Akanji scoring the decisive eighth penalty against local rivals Manchester United.

The game started off in a slow fashion, with Alejandro Garnacho breaking the deadlock in the 82nd minute with a stunning strike, before Bernardo Silva equalised with just a minute of normal time to take the game to penalties at Wembley.

There were just two misses from Bernardo Silva and Jadon Sancho in the first five penalties, which included a goal from Ederson, before it went to sudden death.

Jonny Evans did not look confident stepping up for his side’s eighth and ended up firing over the bar, while Akanji rolled his into the back of the net to give Pep Guardiola’s side the victory.

Erik ten Hag tips ‘high-class player’ Mason Mount to make impact this term

Erik ten Hag is counting on Mason Mount making a big contribution for Manchester United this season.

Mount had a campaign to forget at Old Trafford after joining from Chelsea in July last year for a reported £55million fee.

The 25-year-old was restricted to 20 appearances in all competitions after missing four months due to a calf injury sustained in March and saw his chances of making England’s Euro 2024 squad diminish.

Pep Guardiola explains reasons behind Man City selling Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid

Pep Guardiola said Manchester City will discuss signing another striker to replace Julian Alvarez.

The Argentina international, who scored 36 goals in his two seasons at City, will complete an £82m move to Atletico Madrid.

Guardiola revealed he gave his approval to the World Cup winner’s move and accepted Alvarez probably wanted more first-team football after understudying Erling Haaland.

Manchester United target trio of alternative midfielders after Manuel Ugarte deal collapses

Manchester United have turned their attention to Youssouf Fofana, Sofyan Amrabat and Sander Berge in their search for another midfielder after Paris Saint-Germain did not drop their asking price for Manuel Ugarte.

The FA Cup winners still admire the Uruguay international but have signalled that the time when they were willing to pay a ‘United tax’ for players is over and are willing to move on to alternative targets, with Fofana, Amrabat and Berge among the other midfielders they are considering.

United also had two bids for Jarrad Branthwaite rejected, with Everton holding out for £70m for the defender, and have not returned for a third offer.

Savinho might just be a flagship signing for the multi-club ownership model - as well as for Man City

It is a very old-fashioned route to the top, yet also a very modern one. A few years before joining the Premier League champions, Savinho was getting up at 5am to milk his grandparents’ cows on the family farm in Brazil. Manchester City was not on his mind then, he admitted. “I was really happy being on the farm,” he said, sounding like a throwback to the times when footballers had been miners and millworkers, trained in trades or primed to take over family businesses.

At 20, he has scored in the Copa America, as part of a Brazil forward line with the Champions League winners Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior, played a pivotal role in helping Girona complete a top three in LaLiga with Real Madrid and Barcelona and been bought to supply the City Galacticos. “I’m really looking forward to providing assists for [Erling] Haaland and other players like [Kevin] De Bruyne,” he said.

But City’s flagship summer signing arrived at the Etihad Stadium after a transfer with a difference; or perhaps a sign of things to come.

Marcus Rashford motivated to get back to his best for Man Utd – Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag says Marcus Rashford is “very ambitious and motivated” to rediscover his best form with Manchester United.

Rashford has been linked with a summer move to Paris St Germain after a dramatic slump in form last season.

The England winger scored just eight goals in 43 appearances in all competitions having notched 30 in 2022-23, but has impressed Ten Hag during United’s pre-season tour in the United States.

Manchester United reveal possible date for Leny Yoro Premier League debut

Leny Yoro is likely to make his Manchester United debut in November after undergoing successful surgery on his foot injury.

The £52m signing, United’s biggest buy this summer, was hurt in the pre-season friendly against Arsenal.

The French centre-back will start his rehabilitation after his operation and United expect him to be fit again in about three months.

Prediction

Both sides have enjoyed a mixed preseason, and while we may not see a full-strength line-up from either team, City’s squad depth – added to United’s injuries, lack of signings and generally lower squad quality – should see a fairly straightforward win for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Early team news

For City, several players haven’t played a part in their preseason tour, though some could be expected to return for the first game of the season.

Kyle Walker, John Stones, Phil Foden and Rodri all missed the friendlies, with Guardiola later confirming that they would not be returning to the club until next week.

Erling Haaland will likely start after his preseason hat-trick against Chelsea, while Rico Lewis, Oscar Bobb and Jack Grealish should all feature after impressing in the USA.

It is yet unknown whether players such as Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji will be called upon by the Spaniard, so we may see a surprising line-up from the Cityzens.

Early team news

Manchester United will be without new signing Leny Yoro after the Frenchman underwent successful surgery on his foot earlier this week. He’ll be out for around three months, a little longer than Rasmus Hojlund, who will also miss the Community Shield with an injury.

Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are also doubts, as are Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has been linked with a move away for most of the summer.

“It’s about a trophy, so we will put out a team that is very competitive to win this trophy,” said Ten Hag when speaking about the match.
