Manchester City secured their first Community Shield win since 2019, with Manuel Akanji scoring the decisive eighth penalty against local rivals Manchester United.

The game started off in a slow fashion, with Alejandro Garnacho breaking the deadlock in the 82nd minute with a stunning strike, before Bernardo Silva equalised with just a minute of normal time to take the game to penalties at Wembley.

There were just two misses from Bernardo Silva and Jadon Sancho in the first five penalties, which included a goal from Ederson, before it went to sudden death.

Jonny Evans did not look confident stepping up for his side’s eighth and ended up firing over the bar, while Akanji rolled his into the back of the net to give Pep Guardiola’s side the victory.

Man City 1-1 Manchester United: 7-6 on pens - MAN CITY WIN THE COMMUNITY SHIELD

City have avoided being just the second team – after United – to lose four Community Shield matches in a row.

They lost on penalties to Arsenal before winning the league last year – will we see the same outcome in May 2025?

For United, it’s a disappointing start to the season, but they know the importance of three points in their Premier League opener. The signing of De Ligt looks almost certain, but their midfield needs addressing immediately if they’re to get top four.

A similar story for United, with players who probably shouldn’t even be at the club letting them down once more.

For City, their ever-reliable players get them through the game once more, with Bernardo Silva scoring the equaliser and even Ederson converting a penalty (as well as saving one)!

The trophy ceremony will be up soon.

Manuel Akanji’s penalty is blasted down the middle and City take the win in the curtain-raiser! They go one better than last season.

Plenty of antics once again from Onana, but for nothing in the end.

A superb pen from Nunes – the best of the day as he rifles into the roof of the net.

GOAL!

McTominay up next, and he doesn’t look to confident, but his pen has enough power to creep past Ederson despite the Brazilian diving the right way.
