Liverpool v Bournemouth: Jurgen Klopp hails ‘perfect afternoon’ after 9-0 victory

The clock had ticked into the 98th minute. It was so late that it felt Divock Origi territory, except there is no Origi at Anfield any more. But if there was a vacancy for a new supersub, perhaps Fabio Carvalho is filling it.

His first Liverpool goal came as a replacement against Bournemouth on Saturday. His second was far more significant, ending Newcastle’s unbeaten start to the season, getting Liverpool a win when a draw beckoned, suggesting they have regained their capacity for the unlikely.

It was taken beautifully, Carvalho celebrating his 20th birthday the previous day by swivelling to volley in after a bout of penalty-box pinball.

The ball had come via Mohamed Salah’s shoulder but the sweetest touch came from the summer signing and Liverpool, not for the first time in Klopp’s reign, proved experts in escapology.

For the eighth time in nine league games they trailed. They conjured a comeback victory against a hugely impressive Newcastle side.

Relive all the action from Anfield as Liverpool defeated Newcastle United:

32’ - Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

There’s an appeal for a handball against Dan Burn in the Newcastle box but nothing comes from it. Newcastle then work the ball to the other end of the pitch and Joe Gomez gives away another free kick.

This one is swung in by Matt Targett and drops to Kieran Trippier. He recycle’s the ball and picks out Alexander Isak who flicks it on into the path of Alisson.

28’ - Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle win a free kick just outside the penalty area Kieran Trippier is left to take the set piece. He slips just as he whips a shot at goal and although he sneaks it around the wall he can’t beat Alisson.

25’ - Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Almiron gets the better of Robertson twice but Liverpool this time defend well through the centre. Elliott sparks a counter move which ends in a corner after Robertson overlaps. Gomez ends up shooting but his effort is blocked, then he fouls Isak.

Goals elsewhere around the league: City are 3-0 up against Forest, a hat-trick for Haaland at half-time. Bournemouth and Wolves are 0-0.

Spurs have just taken the lead at West Ham, a Kehrer own goal, while Gabriel Jesus has Arsenal one up against Villa.

At Anfield it’s still all the pressure from the home side in open play, but nothing too testing for Nick Pope to deal with thus far.

18’ - Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Plenty of possession for the home side but no big openings yet. Newcastle on the other hand are playing direct balls which are causing a few issues.

Fraser bends one over the bar, then Diaz attacks the defence again, leaves one defender on his backside and tries a cutback to Salah which is just cleared.

14’ - Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Joelinton pokes a ball through the Liverpool defence but Alisson reacts quicker than anyone in a black and white shirt.

Diaz needs a bit of treatment for a head injury but is fine to continue.

Henderson clips a cross into the area but it’s easy for Pope. The home fans are unhappy about the amount of time being taken over goal kicks so far.

9’ - Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Clash of knees between Diaz and Lascelles and the Newcastle man comes off worst. He isn’t happy that the Colombian arrived a split-second late. Liverpool keep pushing forward and Salah beats Targett, but the Magpies have numbers back and clear.

Isak leads the counter and fires in his first shot from outside the box, but it’s well over the bar.

5’ - Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Isak makes an early run in behind but the ball towards him isn’t accurate. Fraser looks to run beyond Alexander-Arnold but the right-back wins the battle.

A quick switch sees Diaz attack the left again but once more the cross is cleared, this time by Willock. Lots of speed to go end to end in a flash from both sides in these early stages.

2’ - Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Liverpool quickly onto the front foot and looking to play in Newcastle’s penalty box. A good noise inside Anfield early on.

Robertson and Diaz combine down the left but his attempted shot is blocked by Trippier, who will face a busy evening no doubt.

Salah then almost gets on the end of a cross - he’ll be looking for a goal tonight after missing two chances in the 9-0 rout.

Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Kick-off at Anfield!

The gauntlet has been put down already by Man City who are 2-0 up against Forest. Can the Reds respond or will Newcastle continue their unbeaten run?
