Liverpool v Bournemouth: Jurgen Klopp hails ‘perfect afternoon’ after 9-0 victory

The clock had ticked into the 98th minute. It was so late that it felt Divock Origi territory, except there is no Origi at Anfield any more. But if there was a vacancy for a new supersub, perhaps Fabio Carvalho is filling it.

His first Liverpool goal came as a replacement against Bournemouth on Saturday. His second was far more significant, ending Newcastle’s unbeaten start to the season, getting Liverpool a win when a draw beckoned, suggesting they have regained their capacity for the unlikely.

It was taken beautifully, Carvalho celebrating his 20th birthday the previous day by swivelling to volley in after a bout of penalty-box pinball.

The ball had come via Mohamed Salah’s shoulder but the sweetest touch came from the summer signing and Liverpool, not for the first time in Klopp’s reign, proved experts in escapology.

For the eighth time in nine league games they trailed. They conjured a comeback victory against a hugely impressive Newcastle side.

Relive all the action from Anfield as Liverpool defeated Newcastle United:

51’ - Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

Isak gives Willock a clap of thanks for the thought as he chips the ball into the box from the right wing under pressure from two or three Liverpool men.

Alisson plucks the ball off the nose of the striker but he’s getting himself into good areas.

48’ - Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

Brilliant from Trippier. An aerial ball comes over the top to Luis Diaz who knocks it past Trippier and gets into the box. The Newcastle defender times his lunging tackle expertly and sends the ball out for a corner before Diaz can shoot.

Robertson swings the corner into the box but Lascelles is up highest and flicks it away.

Second half: Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

Kick off: Newcastle get the match restarted but give the ball away to Liverpool from the kick off.

The Reds work the ball over to Salah who spies Pope off his line and attempts to lob the goalkeeper but gets it all wrong and fires the effort out of play.

HT Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

Jurgen Klopp was not a happy bunny in the first half. He was raging at the officials, at his players, at the wind... probably. Liverpool have conceded first again just as they have done in almost every game of the season so far.

The only exception is their 9-0 victory over Bournemouth.

Half-time: Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

45+4’ - Pressure on Newcastle right at the end of the half but the Magpies deal with it well. Liverpool just aren’t clicking in the final third.

They’ve won a load of corners but they aren’t translating into chances at goal.

The whistle goes for half-time and Newcastle lead at the break.

Four minutes of added time to play. Trent Alexander-Arnold delivers another corner ball but this one lands in the hands of Nick Pope.

Liverpool are growing frustrated out there.

41’ - Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

Trippier nods an aerial ball behind for a Liverpool corner and gives Andy Robertson the chance to swing in the ball. It’s well defended but knocked out for a repeat.

The second corner is sent in towards Firmino but again Newcastle are prepared and work it clear.

38’ GOAL! - Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle (Isak)⚽️

Newcastle take the lead! Trent Alexander Arnold loses the ball and the visitors work it down the right side. Alexander Isak lays the ball off to Sean Longstaff then sprints into the box.

Longstaff threads it back to him and he blasts a right-footed effort past Alisson to put his team in front!

Great debut for the new man.

35’ - Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

Chance! Liverpool finally get the crowd going with a counter-attacking move that sees Roberto Firmino slide a lovely pass into the right side of the box for Luis Diaz.

He could roll it back to Salah and set up a better chance but decides to go for goal after taking the ball around Nick Pope but he smokes his effort high and wide.

Better from the Reds though.
