Liverpool battled into the quarter-finals of the Champions League after beating Inter Milan 2-1 on aggregate despite a 1-0 defeat in the second leg at Anfield.
The Reds led 2-0 heading into the second leg after Roberto Firmino’s 75th-minute header and Mo Salah’s goal inside the final 10 minutes at the San Siro but found things trickier than expected back on home soil.
Jurgen Klopp’s men lacked a cutting edge all evening as Joel Matip’s first-half header hit the bar and Salah also struck the post before the break when it seemed easier to score.
The Egyptian hit the woodwork for a second time with 15 minutes remaining but by that point, Inter were back in the contest after Lautaro Martinez hammered home an absolute screamer from the edge of the area on 61 minutes that flew into the top corner beyond the outstretched arms of Alisson.
However, two minutes after Martinez had brought the Italian side right back into the tie, Alexis Sanchez’s moment of madness cost them dearly as he was sent off for a second yellow card after a reckless tackle on Fabinho.
Inter gamely battled on with ten men and although Liverpool couldn’t find the goal that would have put the tie to bed, they held on to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

18 mins: Chance! Liverpool win a corner that Trent Alexander-Arnold curls into the middle of the box. Virgil van Dijk is unmarked and wins the header, whipping the ball towards the Inter Milan goal only to see Samir Handanovic cling on to it between the sticks.

15 mins: A poor clearance from Inter Milan is latched on by Andy Robertson who threads a teasing pass into the 18-yard box from the left wing. Mo Salah is hovering in a dangerous area but Bastoni has him marked and steps up to intercept the ball before it reaches the Liverpool forward.

12 mins: Liverpool force Inter Milan to pass the ball back to their own defence and Bastoni belts a long ball down the left wing for Perisic to chase down. He sprints in behind Liverpool’s high line but the ball is always heading away from him and he can’t keep it from bouncing over the byline.

9 mins: Liverpool win a corner that gets whipped into the middle of the box where Vidal jumps highest and heads it away. His clearance comes to Mo Salah who sets up Alexander-Arnold for another cross but his return ball get cleared by Bastoni.

6 mins: Chance! Calhanoglu feeds the ball up to Alexis Sanchez who flicks it out to Ivan Perisic making a run in behind Trent Alexander-Arnold. He floats a cross to the far side of the box but Andy Robertson gets up high and heads it away. The ball drops to Arturo Vidal who nods it across to Denzel Dumfries. He attempts a tricky volleyed shot and scuffs it safely into the hands of Alisson.

3 mins: Liverpool work the ball over to the right wing where Mo Salah dinks it past Alessandro Bastoni and goes driving up to the box. Hakan Calhanoglu tracks back to help out as Salah cuts inside of both players but loses control of the ball. It rolls a bit too far away from him enabling Marcelo Brozovic to boot it clear from inside his own box.

The most recent of the sides’ two ties before this season came at this stage of the 2007/0 Champions League with Liverpool winning 3-0 on aggregate.
Previously, Inter had recovered from a first-leg deficit to progress at Liverpool’s expense in the 1964/65 European Cup semi-finals en route to retaining the trophy.
Roger Hunt’s fourth-minute opener at Anfield was cancelled out by Sandro Mazzola six minutes later before Ian Callaghan (34) and Ian St. John (75) gave the home side the win.
The Italian side were level on aggregate ten minutes into the San Siro return through Mario Corso (8) and Joaquín Peiró (9) before Giancinto Facchetti settled the tie on the hour.
