Liverpool battled into the quarter-finals of the Champions League after beating Inter Milan 2-1 on aggregate despite a 1-0 defeat in the second leg at Anfield.

The Reds led 2-0 heading into the second leg after Roberto Firmino’s 75th-minute header and Mo Salah’s goal inside the final 10 minutes at the San Siro but found things trickier than expected back on home soil.

Jurgen Klopp’s men lacked a cutting edge all evening as Joel Matip’s first-half header hit the bar and Salah also struck the post before the break when it seemed easier to score.

The Egyptian hit the woodwork for a second time with 15 minutes remaining but by that point, Inter were back in the contest after Lautaro Martinez hammered home an absolute screamer from the edge of the area on 61 minutes that flew into the top corner beyond the outstretched arms of Alisson.

However, two minutes after Martinez had brought the Italian side right back into the tie, Alexis Sanchez’s moment of madness cost them dearly as he was sent off for a second yellow card after a reckless tackle on Fabinho.

Inter gamely battled on with ten men and although Liverpool couldn’t find the goal that would have put the tie to bed, they held on to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

Relive the action as Liverpool reached the Champions League quarter-finals:

Liverpool 0 - 0 Inter Milan (2-0 agg)

45+3 mins: Jones is clipped again by Calhanoglu and does win a free kick this time. Liverpool take it quickly and pass the ball over to Fabinho who threads it over to Salah. He drives up towards the box before laying the ball back to Alexander-Arnold. The right-back attempts to whip in a cross but Brozovic charges him down and blocks it.

45 mins: Liverpool break up the pitch through Robertson who plays the ball inside to Curtis Jones. He carries the ball up to the box and wants to play a one-two with Salah to get into the area. As he releases the ball Calhanoglu scrapes a foot down his right ankle and Jones goes down on the edge of the box. He wants a free kick but the referee isn’t interested.

Five minutes of added time to play at the end of the first half.

42 mins: Save! Hakan Calhanoglu takes the free kick and acts as though he’s going to swing in a cross. Instead he goes for goal and drills a low, bouncing effort towards goal but Alisson spies it early and manages to get down to his right and palm the ball clear.

39 mins: It’s now 4-0 to Bayern Munich. Serge Gnabry has scored as well. That match is over already.

Liverpool are comfortable at Anfield. It’s been a decent performance from Inter Milan but they would like to build more pressure in the Reds’ final third. Until Liverpool score though, Inter are still in this tie.

Diogo Jota picks up a yellow card and gives away a free kick over on the right edge of his own box. Is this the chance Inter have been waiting for?

Liverpool 0 - 0 Inter Milan (2-0 agg)

36 mins: Nearly. Inter Milan work the ball nicely out of their own half and pass it through the Liverpool midfield. Brozovic spins towards goal and threads a through ball up to Lautaro Martinez. He sets off after the ball but sees Van Dijk ahead of him and lets the Liverpool defender deal with it knowing he doesn’t have the pace to catch him. It was a good idea from Brozovic though.

33 mins: Off the crossbar! Trent Alexander-Arnold swings the free kick into the penalty area and perfectly picks out Joel Matip who guides a strong header right into the bar!

Inter then clear it behind and Alexander-Arnold curls a corner into the box. Virgil van Dijk is the target this time but he misses his header under pressure from Milan Skriniar who himself nods the ball out of play.

30 mins: There is a round of applause from the Kop as the medical teams make their way back out of the stand. Inter Milan get the game restarted with throw in after a stoppage of around two/three minutes.

Joel Matip drills a pass up to Diogo Jota who controls it well and lays the ball off to Andy Robertson. He passes it out wide to Sadio Mane who gets taken out by Denzel Dumfries and wins Liverpool a free kick in a dangerous area.

The players are being kept on the side of the pitch for now as the medical emergency is dealt with.

Over in Germany, Robert Lewandowski has scored a hat-trick as Bayern lead 3-0 on the night against Salzburg (4-1 on aggregate).

21 mins: In the game between Bayern Munich and Red Bull Salzburg, the home side have taken an early lead. Robert Lewandowski is brought down in the box by Maximilian Wober and then converts the resultant penalty. Bayern lead that tie 2-1 now.

Back at Anfield, Vidal wins a free kick after Fabinho catches him in the middle of the pitch with a late challenge. There was minimal contact and Fabinho isn’t too pleased with the decision.
