From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Review all the day’s transfer news as Chelsea finally unveiled Frank Lampard as Maurizio Sarri’s successor, signalling a new era at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester United continue to chase Sporting midfielder Bruno Fernandes to the point that the player’s agent is travelling to the UK to hold official talks with the Premier League club over a move. Arsenal meanwhile have been offered the chance to sign Barcelona forward Malcom, but the club remain focused on landing Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace and have reportedly pleaded with owner Stan Kroenke for more funds in order to get the move over the line.

Manchester City have strengthened their Premier League title-winning squad with the announcement of £62.5m signing Rodri from Atletico Madrid, while Leicester City have signed Ayoze Perez from Newcastle United in a £30m deal. Liverpool are also active in the transfer window, but they will not be signing Philippe Coutinho this month after his proposed Barcelona exit was ruled out. Review the day’s stories below.

Tottenham have made the biggest splash of the window so far with club record signing Tanguy Ndombele following Leeds’ Jack Clarke through the door in north London as Mauricio Pochettino looks to rebuild his Champions League finalists. Champions Manchester City are set to splash plenty of cash too with Atletico Madrid’s Rodri set to arrive imminently with a move for Juventus right back Joao Cancelo also a strong possibility.

The summer transfer window closes in the Premier League on Thursday 8 August.

Ander Herrera has completed his long-anticipated move to PSG on a free transfer after his contract expired at Manchester United.

The Spaniard was offered a five-year contract by the French champions, while United were reluctant to commit to such a long-term deal, which proved to be the swaying factor in Herrera's decision.

Herrera made 189 appearances for United over the course of five seasons in Manchester, scoring 20 goals and winning FA Cup and Europa League trophies.
