Tottenham gave their season a much-needed shot in the arm with a 5-0 demolition of Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.

It has been a horrible start to the campaign for Mauricio Pochettino's men, who had only won three games before this, but they put all their problems behind them in a pulsating display in Group B.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min both scored twice while Erik Lamela had a red letter day on his 200th appearance for the club, adding a second-half goal to his two assists.

Pochettino, who has admitted his job could be on the line if their slump continues, will hope this can be the start of a resurgence, though that will be put to the immediate test in their next game when they visit Liverpool in the Premier League.

It has to be said that Red Star, who somehow were supported by over 200 fans despite a ban by UEFA, were not up to much, but Spurs were simply too hot to handle and produced a result that went some way to righting the wrongs of that 7-2 humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich last time out.

It also had importance in their ambitions of making it out of the group as they now move into second place and will fancy their chances of progressing.

Mauricio Pochettino has spoken about Tottenham's recent troubles and how he sees them progressing.

He referenced Saturday's 1-1 draw against Watford in the Premier League when Dele Alli scored in the 86th minute to save Spurs from dropping all three points.

He said: “In the last 20 minutes our performance was really good, we pushed, we never gave up and showed our character and quality and with a little more time, for sure, we’d have won the game. That was so important for the game [tonight.] It’s going to be important to get the three points but more than that, to build our confidence and show our real quality.”

He went on to add that the feeling in the group of players is positive but that he hopes the confidence and trust in the team will continue to develop:

“The feeling was okay after the game, not great, but okay, we finished 1-1 with the feeling that we could win the game at the end. That was important for the confidence and now we need to build a run and start to be positive. Always in this type of situation you need to start from the first step, and we hope that Saturday was the first step and we now start to build our confidence and trust, start to be solid again and win games.”

When asked about tonight's opponents, Red Star Belgrade, who have only lost three of their last 131 league games and sit at the top of the Serbian Super Liga, Mauricio Pochettino said:

“In the Champions League you need to respect every opponent. It’s a different competition and they all have quality. Respect is most important. We are in a situation now where we need to improve and to be focused on ourselves. We always try to focus on us and in this period, even more. Red Star have very good players, a very good squad and will be dangerous and if we are not ready to compete at our best it will always be difficult. Every game is important, and we need to recover our best feelings, play a solid game and try to win.”

Tottenham have won just three of their 12 games in all competitions so far this season, not the start Mauricio Pochettino would have imagined during the summer, is this the beginning of the end for the Spurs manager?

Tottenham vs Red Star Belgrade - the stats

Spurs have won just three of their first nine Premier League matches this season, all of them at home but they were held 1-1 here on Saturday by Watford.

Tottenham won their first four matches at their new stadium but have managed only three wins in nine games since.

Harry Kane has 13 games in 14 appearances for club and country this season, six of them have been penalties.

Vladan Milojevic has been in charge of Red Star Belgrade for 39 European matches which is a Serbian record.

Harry Kane has given his thoughts on Tottenham's recent struggles against Bayern Munich and elsewhere. He said:

"The game itself was a close game at halftime. Even at 4-2 it was a fairly close game, whoever got that next goal was going to be important. Of course the mistakes we made towards the end of the game made it seem a lot worse than what it was so we have to move on.

"We want the results to be better, we want to be winning games and get back to the quality that we've shown over the last few years. It is a period were we have to stick together and we all know that, we all know that we can be better. We're all excited to play the next game and try and get that win and get us a bit of momentum.

"We didn't start great in the Champions League last year, a lot of people forget because we went on to reach the Champions League final so it's good to have that motivation in our heads to know that we've been here before and we've overcome that and we've got to the final.

"We've just been sticking together, trying to keep each other's energy high, keep each other positive, it's easy in these situations for everyone to start moaning and to start complaining, for us it's about coming closer.

"We've come a long way in a short space of time and I'm focused on winning trophies here, winning games here. It's my mindset to win every game and every trophy I'm playing in. It's just down to us players to perform on the day."
