After such a fantastic first half of the season, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side now find themselves trapped in a desperate slump, losing all of their last six league games in succession, including a harrowing 9-0 defeat by Manchester United. The Saints briefly topped the table at one stage but have now dropped down to 13th, with their hopes of securing European football now all but extinguished.
However, Chelsea’s fortunes have improved markedly since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, even if a title charge is already beyond the Blues. The club have won five out of six games in all competitions since Frank Lampard was sacked and currently sit fourth, just four points adrift of second-placed Manchester United. There was relief for Timo Werner, too, in a 2-0 victory against Newcastle last time out, with the forward finally bringing his torrid goal drought to an end. Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz have both returned to full training ahead of the fixture, but Tuchel will already have one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid and may choose to rotate his starting line-up. McNeil switches play with a long pass out to Lowton, who tries to fire a pass into the feet of Rodriguez. It deflects away for a throw-in on the left flank, close to the corner flag.

Cork tries to bundle his way through a wall of West Brom defenders. He’s forced to settle for a corner, which Johnstone punches clear.

Close! The first moment of any real quality in the game as Gallagher finds a pocket of space and digs a pass out to Furlong. The full-back cuts onto his left foot and curls an effort just wide, with Pope stretching.

Burnley win a free kick. Westwood, surprisingly goes short, and then Lowton’s long diagonal is headed away. Not much is happening.

Half a chance for Rodriguez, who meets a perfectly-weighted cross from Lowton but glances his header way wide.

Set pieces might be a theme this afternoon, you feel. Pereira whips a free kick into the box and it falls to Yokuslu at the back post. He lifts a cross into the middle, but Cork clears. Gallagher then goes for goal from distance but sends his effort off target.

Now Burnley have the chance to do some damage with a free kick as Gallagher is penalised on left flank. The ball is whipped into the box and flicked straight into the arms of Johnstone.
