Chris Wilder’s beleaguered side finally secured their first victory this season against Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup last weekend and the Blades will be desperate to kickstart what would by now be a miraculous escape from relegation. United have taken just two points from their opening 17 matches, an astonishingly low total, particularly after their high-flying exploits last season. To pick up points, their priority must be to drastically improve their output up front, with just eight goals scored in the league all season.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are attempting to escape a negative spiral of their own, having gone seven games without a victory in all competitions. Frustrations continue to grow over Steve Bruce’s cautious tactics, but the manager has promised his side will offer more in the way of attacking adventure tonight. Despite being chalked off as another loss, the Magpies were bitterly unlucky against Arsenal in the FA Cup last time out. Andy Carroll spurned two magnificent chances in normal time before the Gunners went on to snatch victory in extra-time. Follow all the action live below:
TEAM NEWS
Burnley make four changes, bringing in Westwood, Pope, Brownhill and Lowton in place of Cork, Norris, Stephens and Bardsley.
United rested several players for their FA Cup win over Watford at the weekend, so De Gea, Maguire, Shaw, Pogba, Matic, Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Martial and Cavani return.
BURNLEY VS MANCHESTER UNITED
Over to Turf Moor now, where Manchester United have the chance to go top of the Premier League. Here are the teams…
Sheffield United are still bottom, of course, but they move on to five points and can start to look ahead with a little more optimism. They looked to have regained some confidence today.
Newcastle, meanwhile, were dire again. Their football continues to be turgid, unimaginative and, most worryingly, ineffective. They stay 15th, but a relegation battle looks like the reality for Bruce and his players unless something changes soon.
FULL-TIME: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 NEWCASTLE
That’s it! The cheers of the Sheffield United players ring around Bramall Lane. It’s a first win of the Premier League season for Wilder’s side, at the 18th attempt.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 NEWCASTLE (90+6’)
Almost a catastrophic mistake at the back from Bogle! He watches a long, high ball and chooses to head back towards his goalkeeper, only to realise that Ramsdale has raced off his line. The ball trickles towards goal but just clears the post.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 NEWCASTLE (90+5’)
Newcastle launch the ball into the Sheffield United box but Ramsdale plucks it out of the air unopposed. He wastes some seconds, before punting the ball up the pitch. Then Brewster skips away from Hayden, drawing a foul. The Newcastle man is booked for the challenge.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 NEWCASTLE (90+4’)
A very late change for Sheffield United: Jagielka replaces the impressive McGoldrick.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 NEWCASTLE (90+2’)
Brewster goes clean through on goal and clips his finish disappointingly wide. The flag belatedly goes up because the young striker was clearly offside.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 NEWCASTLE (90+2’)
Murphy strikes the free kick, beating the wall but sending his effort straight at Ramsdale, who clutches the ball to his chest.
We’re into the second of six added minutes.
