Chris Wilder’s beleaguered side finally secured their first victory this season against Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup last weekend and the Blades will be desperate to kickstart what would by now be a miraculous escape from relegation. United have taken just two points from their opening 17 matches, an astonishingly low total, particularly after their high-flying exploits last season. To pick up points, their priority must be to drastically improve their output up front, with just eight goals scored in the league all season.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are attempting to escape a negative spiral of their own, having gone seven games without a victory in all competitions. Frustrations continue to grow over Steve Bruce’s cautious tactics, but the manager has promised his side will offer more in the way of attacking adventure tonight. Despite being chalked off as another loss, the Magpies were bitterly unlucky against Arsenal in the FA Cup last time out. Andy Carroll spurned two magnificent chances in normal time before the Gunners went on to snatch victory in extra-time. Follow all the action live below:
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (13’)
Lowton lifts the ball up to Wood, who’s beaten in the air this time by Maguire. Mee follows up, striking the loose ball first-time and skewing his shot well wide.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (10’)
Another long ball causes problems for United. Barnes flicks it on, allowing Brady to collect in space and fire off a shot, which is charged down.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (9’)
United are yet to get going in attack, unable to establish any control over the game. Burnley have so far succeeded in making this a physical battle, and that suits them perfectly.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (7’)
Burnley are really testing United’s defenders early on. Another high ball into the box is flicked on by Wood, and Barnes almost latches onto it. Maguire gets across to stop the striker, who commits a foul as he stretches for the ball.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (3’)
Matic is robbed by Gudmundsson deep in his own half, and the Burnley man has a shot blocked. It’s a lively start from the hosts.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (1’)
Burnley have an attempt on goal within seconds. Lowton sends a long diagonal ball into the box, where Barnes bullies Wan-Bissaka aside. It drops to Brady, who flashes a first-time shot over the bar.
KICK-OFF
After a minute of silence in memory of the Burnley fans who lost their lives in 2020, the home side get us underway.
The players are out at Turf Moor. Almost time for the second game of the night…
THE MANAGERS SPEAK AHEAD OF KICK-OFF
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: "The incentive is to win, to get three points and just be your best when you can play. You never think past the next game. There's been loads written about our position. You have to earn the right to win here, and stature - physical stature - is always important."
Sean Dyche: "The main thing we're looking to build on is our performance level. We obviously have to be aware of the opposition, especially good opposition like this. We've got to find that balance to attack, which isn't so easy against the top sides."
