Chris Wilder’s beleaguered side finally secured their first victory this season against Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup last weekend and the Blades will be desperate to kickstart what would by now be a miraculous escape from relegation. United have taken just two points from their opening 17 matches, an astonishingly low total, particularly after their high-flying exploits last season. To pick up points, their priority must be to drastically improve their output up front, with just eight goals scored in the league all season.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are attempting to escape a negative spiral of their own, having gone seven games without a victory in all competitions. Frustrations continue to grow over Steve Bruce’s cautious tactics, but the manager has promised his side will offer more in the way of attacking adventure tonight. Despite being chalked off as another loss, the Magpies were bitterly unlucky against Arsenal in the FA Cup last time out. Andy Carroll spurned two magnificent chances in normal time before the Gunners went on to snatch victory in extra-time. Follow all the action live below:
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (62’)
Westwood clips the heels of Martial and goes into the book.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (60’)
Fernandes finds himself on the edge of the Burnley box with a sea of claret shirts in front of him. He manages to curl a shot on target but Pope makes another comfortable save.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (57’)
A couple of nearly moments for United. First, Pogba jinks past a couple of players and plays a pass into Martial, who can’t find room to shoot in the box. Then Fernandes lifts a cross into the path of Pogba, but the Frenchman is offside.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (56’)
Fernandes collects the ball on the turn, shifts it onto his left foot and fires a low shot at goal. It rolls through relatively harmlessly to Pope, but United are starting to threaten more regularly now.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (52’)
Chance! Fernandes picks out Martial on the left, and the Frenchman’s ball into the middle looks certain to be converted by Cavani from close range. But the slightest of touches on its way through takes it away from the United forward, who swings a left foot at the ball and doesn’t connect properly.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (51’)
Neat interplay again from Burnley’s forward players as Gudmundsson feeds Wood, who sets up Barnes to shoot. The effort is scuffed, though, and De Gea collects.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (49’)
United start the half on the front foot but there’s still no way through a rigid Burnley defence. The visitors are repeatedly crossing the ball, which seems like an approach that’s playing into the home side’s hands.
Fernandes has a go from distance but his effort is blocked.
