Chris Wilder’s beleaguered side finally secured their first victory this season against Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup last weekend and the Blades will be desperate to kickstart what would by now be a miraculous escape from relegation. United have taken just two points from their opening 17 matches, an astonishingly low total, particularly after their high-flying exploits last season. To pick up points, their priority must be to drastically improve their output up front, with just eight goals scored in the league all season.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are attempting to escape a negative spiral of their own, having gone seven games without a victory in all competitions. Frustrations continue to grow over Steve Bruce’s cautious tactics, but the manager has promised his side will offer more in the way of attacking adventure tonight. Despite being chalked off as another loss, the Magpies were bitterly unlucky against Arsenal in the FA Cup last time out. Andy Carroll spurned two magnificent chances in normal time before the Gunners went on to snatch victory in extra-time. Follow all the action live below:
BURNLEY 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (80’)
And that’s Rashford’s last action of the game. Greenwood replaces him.
Burnley also make a change, sending on Vydra for Wood.
BURNLEY 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (79’)
United break through Cavani, who feeds Rashford to his left. The latter tries to find some space to shoot, but when his path is blocked he backtracks and eventually loses the ball. It’s been a frustrating night for the England international.
BURNLEY 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (77’)
Burnley spend a bit of time in United’s half, but Maguire and Bailly are in the way of every cross. There hasn’t been enough creativity from the hosts.
BURNLEY 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (73’)
It’s hard to see a way back into this for Burnley, though at 0-1 there’s always the possibility of a response. But United have been in complete control in the second half and the goal was a reward for their persistent pressure.
GOAL! BURNLEY 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (POGBA 71’)
What a strike! Rashford is picked out on the right and lifts the ball out to Pogba, who drills a volley at goal from the edge of the box. There’s too much pace on the ball for Pope, wrong-footed by a slight deflection off Lowton and helpless as it slides through his legs. United are in front.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (70’)
United’s attacks are almost constant now, with Burnley dropping deeper and deeper. It’ll be a challenge for Dyche’s side to sustain the kind of discipline they’ve shown so far.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (69’)
There’s a quick VAR check after Pogba appeals for a penalty in the box, claiming a push from Brownhill. It’s not given, and would’ve been incredibly soft.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (67’)
Rashford drives down the right, skipping past a couple of players before slamming a cross against Pieters. It goes behind for a corner, which drops at the feet of Cavani, who moves into space and guides a left-footed shot high and wide.
BURNLEY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (65’)
Burnley send on McNeil in place of Brady.
