Zinedine Zidane’s team are trailing the league leaders by six points and the Real boss says Atletico are clear favourites heading into the derby. Atletico also have a game in hand and have only conceded twice all season in the league, without losing a game so far.
Both sides won last time out, with Real defeating Sevilla and Atleti seeing off Real Valladolid, and in midweek the Spanish giants were also successful in winning their Champions League games.
Eden Hazard will miss out for Real through injury once more, but Karim Benzema has been in magnificent form of late - yet still faces a big task to get past the league’s best defence and Jan Oblak.
The match kicks off at 8pm and you can follow all the latest updates from the Madrid derby below.
44’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
Final moments of the half. Mendy makes the run through at centre-forward and Benzema’s pass comes within an inch of finding him, but he can’t quite reach on the stretch. No time added on and that’ll be the whistle.
42’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
Trippier delivers a cross from the right which isn’t heading anywhere, but Ramos flicks it away for a corner. The set-piece goes short, Real clear for another, the second goes into the box but Real react first once more. It’s marginally more proactive from Atletico and they have the ball higher upfield, but in general their passing has been shocking.
38’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
Suarez tries to dribble into the area but Ramos does well to intercept. Benzema then leads an attack up the other end, but Lucas’ cross is claimed by Oblak with two waiting at the far post.
34’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
Benzema tries to set Lucas Vazquez free on the counter, but Atleti have numbers back to stop the run. Joao Felix is then chopped down by Casemiro on the run and the Brazilian is booked - he’ll miss Real Madrid’s next match, which is against Athletic Club on Tuesday night.
30’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
Can’t imagine Simeone will be happy with this. They haven’t imposed themselves on the game at all, just holding Real at bay in passive style - and not in entirely successful style either, given they are trailing.
26’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
Koke loses the ball to Vinicius in his own half, but Kroos can’t find a pass this time, loses possession - and Atletico pass it straight out of play again. Rash and scrappy from los rojiblancos so far, midway through the first half and without any real link-up play in attack.
22’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
Atleti bringing the fight somewhat more now. Courtois has to palm a high ball away inside his six-yard box and Real are back on the front foot. Toni Kroos is running the show so far.
18’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
Atletico trying to put a bit of pressure on Real in midfield and get themselves back into the game. They haven’t really started as an attacking entity yet, with neither wing-back really getting into advanced positions.
GOAL! 14’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
It was indeed a save by Oblak - and a brilliant one, getting a touch onto the post there from Benzema.
But it’s a short-lived respite as a corner from the right is met by Casemiro and he powers a header into the bottom corner!
