Zinedine Zidane’s team are trailing the league leaders by six points and the Real boss says Atletico are clear favourites heading into the derby. Atletico also have a game in hand and have only conceded twice all season in the league, without losing a game so far.
Both sides won last time out, with Real defeating Sevilla and Atleti seeing off Real Valladolid, and in midweek the Spanish giants were also successful in winning their Champions League games.
Eden Hazard will miss out for Real through injury once more, but Karim Benzema has been in magnificent form of late - yet still faces a big task to get past the league’s best defence and Jan Oblak.
The match kicks off at 8pm and you can follow all the latest updates from the Madrid derby below.
70’ - Real 2-0 Atletico
Real passing around with ease and control in midfield now. They aren’t trying to force anything, just retaining possession and tiring out their rivals.
66’ - Real 2-0 Atletico
Spaces starting to open up now. Atletico have to be more on the front foot and that will see Real counter with a greater threat in the final quarter of the match.
GOAL - 62’ - Real 2-0 Atletico
A stunner out of nowhere! Dani Carvajal picks the ball up 25 yards out and unleashes an absolute rocket, it smacks the post, hits Oblak on the back and bounces into the net!
60’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
Interesting sub from Simeone. Felix is taken off and isn’t remotely happy about it. Benzema sees his shot blocked by Trippier, then Saul fouls Vinicius and is in the book within a minute.
Atleti sub: Felix off, Saul on
56’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
Unbelievable miss. Atleti move it left to right, Llorente crosses low, nobody clears and Lemar arrives at the far post - but he side-foots into the side-netting from five yards. Should be one-all.
52’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
Ramos’ free-kick is hammered straight into the wall, where Lemar gets his head in the way. A corner routine is then played back toward Ferland Mendy, but he’s off-balance and smashes well over the bar on his right foot.
48’ - Real 1-0 Atletico
Thomas Lemar is booked all of a minute after coming on. Atleti have gone straight into their 4-4-2, with Correa right-wing and Lemar left.
Lodi gives the ball away to Benzema in the area, he plays it back to Kroos on the edge of the box - and Correa has to take him down. Free-kick, just outside.
SECOND HALF
We are back underway and Atletico boss Simeone hasn’t held back - he has reacted with a triple substitution at the break.
Lemar, Lodi and Correa on, Herrera, Carrasco and Felipe off.
