Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Goncalo Guedes scored the only goal of the game as Portugal beat Holland to be crowned the first-ever Nations League champions.

The final in Porto was not a game for the ages as a match billed as a battle between the two captains, Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil Van Dijk, was settled by Valencia forward Guedes on the hour mark.

The 1-0 win was enough for the reigning European champions to add the inaugural Nations League crown to their honours list with victory in front of their own fans. Re-live the action below:

Portugal 1 - 0 Netherlands

90+3 mins: Portugal have done it! The European Champions become the very first Nations League winners as well!

A goal from Goncalo Guedes was the only difference between the two teams and Portugal become the first international team to host and win a major trophy final since France in 1998.

The trophy comes out onto the pitch

The referees go up the podium for their medals as Portugal give the Netherlands a guard of honour.

They go up next to receive their runners-up medals.

Ronaldo lifts the trophy!

Fernando Santos leads the Portugal team onto the stage as they shake hands and collect their winners medals. The team form up and wait as Cristiano Ronaldo brings up the rear.

He gets his medal followed by the Nations League trophy, before thrusting it into the air and queue the celebrations!
