From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Gabriel Jesus was denied a last-gasp winner by VAR as Tottenham Hotspur snatched a remarkable 2-2 draw against champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The Brazilian looked to have claimed a deserved victory for City right at the death of an intriguing Premier League clash but his late strike was ruled out for a handball by Aymeric Laporte. The scenes as the goal was chalked off were reminiscent of the dramatic ending to last season's Champions League tie between the two sides at the same venue last season.

The ruling made the encounter extra frustrating for City, who had completely dominated proceedings and racked up 30 shots to the visitors' three.

Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

29 minutes

Another chance for Southampton! They win the ball in midfield again and Redmond sets Bertrand free down the left. His ball across is parried away by Adrian, but only into the path of Valery, whose tame shot is blocked.

Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

33 minutes

Oxlade-Chamberlain plays a ball over the top for Salah to chase, and the Egyptian races onto it. He strikes the ball on his left foot from a tight angle, but it's a wild effort and flies well off target.

Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

Romeu slides into a hard challenge on Robertson and appears to get the ball. Referee Andre Marriner doesn't think so, though, and blows for a free kick. The Southampton midfielder's angry reaction earns him a booking.

Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

38 minutes

Big chance! Southampton go close again, this time through Adams. Romeu swings the ball into the box, right onto the head of the young striker. But he can only nod the ball over the bar. The hosts should really be in front.

Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

42 minutes

Liverpool are lacking fluidity, lacking ideas in the final third. They've created nothing since that bright opening few minutes. Southampton, meanwhile, look energetic and confident when they attack.

Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

44 minutes

Romeu plays Adams in behind but his cross is straight at Matip. The 23-year-old has been lively in this first half, but so far has lacked a little composure.

GOAL! Southampton 0-1 Liverpool (Mane)

45+1 minutes

Wow! Brilliant from Mane! The former Southampton man collects the ball just inside the box, works it onto his right foot and curls a superb strike into the far corner. Liverpool have been second best for much of this half, but they lead through a moment of sheer quality.

Half time: And that's the end of the first half. Southampton will be wondering how they find themselves a goal down. They've had the better chances, pinned Liverpool back for much of the opening 45 minutes and looked fairly comfortable defensively. But a piece of individual brilliance from Mane has given the visitors the lead.
