Chelsea vs Watford: Premier League preview

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Chelsea hosted Watford in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues have their Champions League chances firmly in their own hands after they battled to a deserved win over the Hornets at Stamford Bridge. A tepid first-half was put behind them in the second with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, David Luiz and Gonzalo Higuain all scoring to move Maurizio Sarri's side up to third above Tottenham and Arsenal in the race for the top four.

We'll have all the latest throughout the afternoon here.

GOAL! Huddersfield 0-1 Manchester United (Scott McTominay, 8 minutes)

An opener from Manchester United, and it is Scott McTominay!

McTominay has a little more licence to push forward with Nemanja Matic also included, and he pushes on to the edge of the box left of centre here. Quick footwork takes him beyond Terence Kongolo and opens space for a left-footed shot, which is well hit but straight at Jonas Lössl.

The Huddersfield keeper does not cover himself in glory at all, a half-hearted, almost perfunctory attempt to save a ball at his side with squirms in off his thigh. He has to do better with that.

Chelsea 0-0 Watford, 8 minutes

Top save from Kepa Arrizabalaga!

Troy Deeney looks to have surely beaten the Spaniard with a header from a Jose Holebas cross but Kepa somehow manages to turn the ball on to the post in spectacular fashion.

Chelsea 0-0 Watford, 9 minutes

That's a big blow for Chelsea.

N'Golo Kante has over-exerted himself and won't be able to continue.

On comes Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Huddersfield 0-1 Manchester United, 14 minutes

Huddersfield have failed to readjust since going behind, most of their energy gone with a pride-salvaging triumph now even more unlikely.

Marcus Rashford wins a free kick in another good position...

Huddersfield 0-1 Manchester United, 15 minutes

Which Juan Mata fires into the top of the wall. Wasteful.

Chelsea 0-0 Watford, 15 minutes

Watford have built and built and are comfortably on top at Stamford Bridge.

Huddersfield 0-1 Manchester United, 18 minutes

Vital intervention from Terence Kongolo, just about getting a toe in as Juan Mata cushioned a pass beyond him in Marcus Rashford's direction.

Manchester United then win back-to-back corners. Huddersfield look vulnerable...

Chelsea 0-0 Watford, 19 minutes

Watford still in the ascendancy, David Luiz in particular hugely troubled by Troy Deeney through these first 20 minutes.

Huddersfield 0-1 Manchester United, 22 minutes

Huddersfield attack for the first time but it is all a little higgledy-piggledy, never fully in control as they work the ball forwards and look for openings in the final third, Aaron Mooy ending the movement with a fittingly messy challenge on Marcus Rashford after letting the ball bounce out of control.
