Chelsea vs Watford: Premier League preview

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Chelsea hosted Watford in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues have their Champions League chances firmly in their own hands after they battled to a deserved win over the Hornets at Stamford Bridge. A tepid first-half was put behind them in the second with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, David Luiz and Gonzalo Higuain all scoring to move Maurizio Sarri's side up to third above Tottenham and Arsenal in the race for the top four.

We'll have all the latest throughout the afternoon here.

A word for Brighton, who had nothing to play for but gave it their absolute all, taking a commendable point. Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy were excellent.

Chris Hughton all-but-secures Tottenham's Champions League spot. You suspect he'll be a rather happy man...

31 shots in the game, and yet not a single goal from anywhere except the penalty spot. Crazy stuff.

The Arsenal players have had to get back on their feet and back on the pitch for a curtain call in front of their home fans, grim-faced to a man.

They'll have to pick themselves back up for the second leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday.

That'll be all from us at the end of an afternoon where the race for the top four finally sorted itself out, disappointing draws for Manchester United and Arsenal against sides with nothing to play for underlining the unpredictability of football.

Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Watford secured them a spot in the top four where they will almost certainly be joined by Tottenham, the mis-step at Bournemouth yesterday in the end costing very little as the chasing pack continued to flounder.
