Chelsea vs Watford: Premier League preview

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Chelsea hosted Watford in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues have their Champions League chances firmly in their own hands after they battled to a deserved win over the Hornets at Stamford Bridge. A tepid first-half was put behind them in the second with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, David Luiz and Gonzalo Higuain all scoring to move Maurizio Sarri's side up to third above Tottenham and Arsenal in the race for the top four.

We'll have all the latest throughout the afternoon here.

PENALTY! Granit Xhaka has no complaints as clips Solly March's heels, and Brighton are awarded a penalty...

Xhaka is too slow to keep up with March despite having the advantage of the angle, a pull of the shirt, a kick at the ankle, and a stonewall penalty.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-1 Brighton (Glenn Murray, 61 minutes)

Glenn Murray converts!

Another well-taken spot kick. Brighton are level.

Real nerves in this Arsenal performance now.

Nacho Monreal gets himself in a complete tangle in his own box and is lucky that Anthony Knockaert can't sort his feet out and take the opportunity Monreal hands him.

Lewis Dunk is cautioned for a cuddle of Alexandre Lacazette, who reacts in fiery fashion.

Nearly an awful moment for Bernardo, a miscommunication between the linesman and referee meaning the whistle is not blown as he gives possession up after Stephan Lichtsteiner stands on his heel, Lichtsteiner striding into the Brighton box before Anthony Taylor finally produces the peep.

Lichtsteiner is booked, perhaps for the challenge, perhaps for another dramatic reaction to the decision.

Arsenal have, of course, lost their last three games, so this is hardly out of the blue, but they are in a real battle.

Granit Xhaka wins back-to-back corners.

Xhaka swings it to the far post where Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang lines up something special, fading from goal as he meets the floater on the volley cleanly.

Over the top.

Up rises Aubameyang, down goes Bruno, away flies the ball.

Arsenal starting to beat on the door.

Aubameyang looks the likeliest, but probably not from there.

Mat Ryan gathers a limp 30-yarder.

At the other end Anthony Knockaert fires similarly feebly.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wins a corner, which is eventually punched behind for another.
