Neil Warnock's side needed to win at home to stand any chance of catching Brighton and Hove Albion, who sit four points above the Bluebirds ahead of their Sunday encounter with Arsenal.
But Palace were always on the front foot early on and took the lead through Wilfried Zaha, and despite a Martin Kelly own goal levelling the scores, Michy Batshuayi soon restored the advantage. Andros Townsend added a third in the second half that proved to be the final nail in the coffin, and while Cardiff scored a late consolation through Bobby Reid, their relegation to the Championship was confirmed soon after. They both claim the victories and the three points.
The results are:
West Ham 3 - 0 Southampton
Wolves 1 - 0 Fulham
Three out of five Premier League games done with today.
Three victories for the home sides.
If this trend continues it's good news for Cardiff who host Crystal Palace next but not so much for Liverpool who travel to Newcastle at 7:45pm.
After scoring a brace today, here's Marko Arnautovic's post match reaction:
"The manager kept saying we must win this last game at home, the fans wanted to see that, we did a great game, we're happy and I think the fans are also.
"We played very well, defensively, in midfield, attacking - we created a lot of chances. It's a nice finish but it's still not the end, there's one game to go."
