Neil Warnock's side needed to win at home to stand any chance of catching Brighton and Hove Albion, who sit four points above the Bluebirds ahead of their Sunday encounter with Arsenal.
But Palace were always on the front foot early on and took the lead through Wilfried Zaha, and despite a Martin Kelly own goal levelling the scores, Michy Batshuayi soon restored the advantage. Andros Townsend added a third in the second half that proved to be the final nail in the coffin, and while Cardiff scored a late consolation through Bobby Reid, their relegation to the Championship was confirmed soon after. Cardiff had the better of the opening stages but Crystal Palace are in control of possession now, their final ball into the box is poor though and Cardiff have a chance to break.

Ayew brings the ball forward into the middle of the pitch, he gives it to Milivojevic who sends Zaha into the box with a long through ball. Zaha does some fancy footwork, puts the ball on his left and sends it wide.

Second time lucky for Zaha. He gets the ball on the left wing and brings it inside before giving it to Townsend who has drifted out onto the wing. Townsend brings it into the box and gives it back to Zaha in the 'D', he puts the ball onto his right foot and shoots, putting the ball into the bottom left corner and making things immeasurable more difficult for Cardiff City.

Bacuna is sent down the right wing with the ball. He then puts in a curling ball into Palace's box. There's a communication breakdown between Kelly and Guaita as the goalkeeper comes for the ball. The Crystal Palace defender gets there first however and he knocks the ball into the space left by the keeper and into the back of the net.
What a lifeline for Cardiff.

Milivojevic delivers a Crystal Palace free kick into the Cardiff box. Gunnarson heads it away before Batshuayi spoons an attempt way over the bar.

Zaha brings the ball in from the left and gives it to Milivojevic. He passes to Batshuayi who plays a one-two with Ayew to beat Manga and fire the ball into the back of the net.
42 mins: Cardiff 1 - 2 Crystal Palace
McArthur keeps the ball in play on the right, he runs it into the box and pulls it back to Zaha who shoots and is blocked by his teammate Ayew.
Guaita makes two saves from two set pieces to deny Cardiff an equaliser.

4 minutes added on at the end of the first half due to the injury to Camarasa.
