Over the break it was one of their stars in Jack Grealish who was making all the headlines, shining with England and quickly becoming a favourite of the national team’s fans.
Domestically, Villa have won five of their seven games so far and a win will take them level with Leicester City, who went into the break top of the table.
Brighton have struggled to find an end product to go with their at-times excellent build-up play and have just one win from eight games so far, 16th in the table at the start of play. Follow the end of Newcastle vs Chelsea and the build-up to the game at Villa Park below:
NEWCASTLE 0-1 CHELSEA (58’)
Chance! Some scruffy defending from Chelsea allows Hayden to break into the box, but he blazes over from close range. It wouldn’t have counted anyway, though, as the midfielder is penalised for handball.
NEWCASTLE 0-1 CHELSEA (57’)
Chiwell crosses from the left and watches as his delivery sails over everyone’s head. Then Chilwell tries one of his trademark whipped crosses from the opposite flank, but it’s too close to Darlow.
NEWCASTLE 0-1 CHELSEA (55’)
Zouma, who’s already got a few goals to his name this season, rises highest from a corner but powers his header just wide.
NEWCASTLE 0-1 CHELSEA (53’)
Big chance! A long ball forward looks routine for Schar, but he switches off and allows Werner to steal in. The German finds himself one on one with Darlow, and instead of shooting tries to find Ziyech to his right. His ball across is intercepted, though, and the opportunity squandered.
NEWCASTLE 0-1 CHELSEA (51’)
This kind of display would almost certainly not have been accepted by a packed home crowd at St James’ Park. There’s no one in the stadium to spur Newcastle on and it feels like they really need it.
NEWCASTLE 0-1 CHELSEA (48’)
Newcastle have started the half with a little more intensity, so maybe they’ll manage a shot on target soon and really get their fans’ heart rates going.
Kick-off
Newcastle get the second half underway. Lascelles won’t be able to carry on, so Schar replaces him.
A stat that perhaps sums up the first half: Kurt Zouma completed 65 passes, only four fewer than Newcastle’s total of 69.
Half-time
And that’s it for the first half. It’s been dominant from Chelsea, who will probably be disappointed that their lead is just one goal. They’ve had almost 80% of the ball and forced Darlow into a few excellent saves, but it’s an own goal from Fernandez that separates the sides at the break.
