From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Scotland will be looking to bounce back against San Marino after their humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Kazakhstan.

After that shock upset, San Marino will certainly fancy their chances against Alex McLeish's side - despite being the lowest-ranked country in world football and having conceded 37 goals in their last ten matches.

Scotland must now secure a win to keep their hopes of automatically qualifying for Euro 2020 alive.

GOAL! San Marino 0-2 Scotland (Russell)

74 minutes

Finally! Scotland have left it late, but that should confirm the win. San Marino commit players forward and allow Scotland to break with numbers. The ball is played across goal and McNulty's dummy runs through to Russell, who moves the ball onto his right foot and slams his finish into the roof of the net.

McNulty should make it 3-0, picked out in the middle yards out from goal. He glances his header wide of the post under no pressure.

McNulty is determined to make amends for his earlier miss. He wins another header and again guides it off target, but he's penalised for a foul on the defender anyway.

Full time: That's it! Scotland get the job done, but it was an unconvincing and tentative performance against the worst international team in the world. The victory will be welcome and gives the Scots something to build on. But there are still plenty of questions to be answered. McLeish will, no doubt, face more criticism after today's game.

Next up: it's the slightly more appealing prospect of the Netherlands vs Germany, a fixture steeped in history. The Dutch, who got the better of Joachim Low's side in the Nations League last November, have been in excellent form under Ronald Koeman and beat Belarus convincingly in their opening game of this qualification campaign.

For Germany, things are less rosy. Wednesday's 1-1 friendly draw with Serbia did little to silence their critics and the players were booed by their own fans at the final whistle.

Elsewhere in Group C, Northern Ireland host Belarus, looking to build on their 2-0 victory over Estonia. Michael O'Neill's side have been given the unenviable task of finishing above one of Germany or the Netherlands, but back-to-back wins would represent an ideal start.
