Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Northern Ireland welcome Austria to Belfast in what is effectively a dead-rubber in Group B3.

Northern Ireland will want to reclaim some pride nonetheless as Michael O’Neill’s side are yet to register a point, and are already guaranteed.

Austria drew 0-0 with runaway Group B3 Leaders Bosnia-Herzegovina on Thursday, but a squad that includes Bayern Munich’s David Alaba will want to finish off their Nations League campaign with a win. Follow it live:

Northern Ireland 0-0 Austria, 42 minutes

Now then.

Xaver Schlager drags down George Saville from behind after more good work from Stuart Dallas.

Left side of the box, 20 yards out. A chance...

Northern Ireland 0-0 Austria, 43 minutes

Niall McGinn strolls up, curls it to the near post...

About two feet wide, and Heinz Lindner had it covered. A decent effort, but you would have liked him to have at least worked the goalkeeper.

Northern Ireland 0-0 Austria, 45 minutes

One additional minute at the end of the first half.

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 17:47

Inevitably, as two sides with nothing to play for, one which has struggled desperately for goals recently and one missing their primary goalscoring threat, finish the first half at deadlock. 0-0.

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 17:48

So just Corry Evans' early double-deflected effort to really mention from that half.

Heinz Lindner did well to tip it over the bar, and otherwise neither side has created a clear chance from open play.

Norhtern Ireland have now gone over five hours without scoring a goal. Will they find one in the second half?

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 17:57

Stuart Dallas impressed from left-back in the first half. Can he force a breakthrough?

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 18:00

A half time change for the visitors: Peter Zulj comess off the bench with Stefan Ilsanker (who may have been struggling with an injury towards the end of the first 45) replaced.

The second half has begun.

GOAL! Northern Ireland 0-1 Austria (Xaver Schlager, 49 minutes)

Austria lead!

It is good play from the replacement Zulj to work the ball down the left.

He manages to cut back towards his support and David Alaba cleverly lets it run across him, right into Xaver Schlager's path.

The talented 21-year-old fires home impressively from the edge of the box, sweeping home with his left foot across goal past Trevor Carson diving to his left.

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 18:08

Northern Ireland 0-1 Austria, 52 minutes

Julian Baumgartlinger has to haul down Jordan Jones as the pacey wideman knocks it past the Austrian captain and is booked.

From the resulting free kick there are penalty appeals, but Jonny Evans went down too softly under light Aleksandar Dragovic contact.

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 18:12

Northern Ireland 0-1 Austria, 53 minutes

Better from the hosts.

Good interplay down the right sees the ball squared to Steven Davis on the penalty spot.

The Northern Ireland captain has to take a touch, and by the time he has settled and unfurled his shot, Aleksandar Dragovic is able to launch himself and block.
