England manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that John Stones will replace fellow defender Phil Jones in his 23-man World Cup squad for Brazil if the Manchester United player does not recover from a shoulder injury in time before he names his final squad for the tournament.

Hodgson has named Jones in his 23-man squad and Everton's 19-year-old defender Stones on his standby list. Hodgson has until 2 June to confirm his final squad.

Jones suffered the shoulder injury in United's 3-1 victory over Hull City last week. Although he has not dislocated his shoulder, he still needs to recover from ligament damage.

"John Stones will be Phil Jones's replacement if he isn't fit by 2 June," Hodgson confirmed today. "Stones and Flanagan will come to [the training camp in] Portugal."
