Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Four days on from a strong display in a 0-0 draw against World champions Germany, a Brazil side boasting the likes of Neymar, Philippe Coutinho and Gabriel Jesus failed to break down a resolute England defence.

Fernandinho came closest to settling the contest as the Brazil substitute hit the post in the second-half as Gareth Southgate again opted for an experimental side as he continues his plans for the World Cup.

What have they been saying?

Gareth Southgate on Marcus Rashford: “It's amazing really that he's been a player who's been able to dip under the radar as we think so much of him, not only his ability, but his mentality and his maturity.

“He's a very exciting player, but grounded, wants to improve all the time. For me he's going to be a top player. He has all the attributes of the top players I've worked with, but he's still only 20.

“Quite often we look across at each other in training and raise our eyebrows at some of the things he does. He's a very exciting player."

“Jose (Mourinho) wouldn't mess around, but he picks him in all the big games and is on the field in nearly every game.

“We wanted to look after him last summer as we see him as a big part of our future. He'll score goals... his technique and his finishing ability are tremendous.”

Dani Alves on his team-mate Gabriel Jesus: “I wasn't joking when I called him the new Ronaldo.

“He's already great and will get better. For all that he's done, all that he's achieved, there's no pressure.

“He's doing what he loves.”

What has Gareth Southgate been saying this week?

On whether his selection of young players in this England squad will make more senior players think twice about withdrawing in future: “Yes, that’s what you want to get to as a team - that the competition for places is so intense.

“Coutinho hasn’t played for a few weeks for Liverpool, but he is there for Brazil. I imagine part of that is because he is thinking ‘if I’m not there and I’m not playing and someone else goes in, do I get the shirt back?’

“Maybe we haven’t had that, but I think moving forward we will have and I think that will affect people’s approach, definitely.”

Ryan Giggs explains why he WOULDN'T have started Loftus-Cheek against Germany

"I wouldn't have started him, purely because he's young and he's only played 20 games at first-class level.

"He was a breath of fresh air but to do it against Germany and get all the adulation and then to do it again against Brazil is a big ask.

"England haven't got too many options in that position so it's not a huge surprise to see him start again and hopefully he puts in another brilliant performance."

Pre-match quotes from Gareth Southgate

On whether Brazil are a tougher opponent than Germany: "No question. They're the best team in the world. They had the toughest qualification group and they annihilated everyone in South America."

On whether Ruben Loftus-Cheek made himself un-droppable with his performance against Germany: "We might have only played him in the first game but he had a really accomplished debut and we want to see him again."

On the confidence boost a win against Brazil would give his side: "To have success next summer, we'll probably have to beat these. We've got to beat the top teams so it's a great opportunity to test ourselves and see exactly where we are."
