Germany and Denmark's Euro 2024 last 16 match in Dortmund halted due to storm

Germany advanced to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after an enthralling and fascinating contest against Denmark in Dortmund.

The hosts started as the more aggressive side and thought they had the opener when Nico Schlotterbeck headed home in the fourth minute. That goal was ruled out for an infringement in the box and Denmark had a reprieve.

They strengthened in the first half and were in the ascendancy when a rare thunderstorm called proceedings to a halt due to dangerous lightning. The match resumed and the team went into the break all square.

Denmark then struck first in the second half as Jaochim Andersen finished of a fortunate set piece routine only for VAR to rule him offside. Mere minutes later, Andersen was penalised for handling the ball in his own box and gave away a penalty.

Kai Havertz slotted it past Kasper Schmeichel and the hosts never looked back. Jamal Musiala added a second with a superb curling strike and Germany secured the win to reach the next round.

38 mins: Gundogan drives the ball through midfield but is tackled by a back tracking Rasmus Hojlund who commits a foul in the process.

The free kick is then played out to David Raum who sends a cross into the penalty area. The ball comes to Rudiger who flicks it on to Havertz with the striker bombing a header straight at Kasper Schmeichel who keeps it out!

Okay then.

Eight minutes or so to play (plus added time) until the end of the first half and another break in play. The rain has fully stopped with the adverse weather seemingly passed over the stadium.

This will be an annoying little session for the players as Michael Oliver gets the match going once more.

Referee Michael Oliver is back in the tunnel leading to the pitch, there are a lot of people milling about trying to look busy as the rain has eased up.

The players are sent back out to warm up on the pitch. The game will resume in five minutes time.

Over on ITV the pundits are discussing the action we’ve seen in the game so far. Ian Wright said: “It did look like a great start from Germany as they put Denmark under pressure.

“The Danes couldn’t keep the ball and you felt like the disallowed goal was the perfect time for them to score.”

The Danish support staff wanted the match to be stopped earlier than it was too. Head coach Kasper Hjulmand was an assistant at Wieghorst HC when Jonathan Richter almost died playing for FC Nordsjaelland in a reserve game due to being hit by lightning.

Inside the tunnel, referee Michael Oliver is talking to other officials and is obviously trying to assess the situation in order to get the game going again.

Water is pouring down into the stadium now, very reminiscent to scenes at Old Trafford earlier this year. Supporters are wearing rain coats and ponchos.

Well, all except two who have gone shirtless and are dancing inside the makeshift waterfall.

This is the best view of the lightning and the reason why the players have been taken off the pitch.

There seems to be a lot of lightning around, easily enough for it to be a problem for the officials. There’s now hail stone falling and the players have been taken inside.

The match is suspended for now.
