Germany and Denmark's Euro 2024 last 16 match in Dortmund halted due to storm

Germany advanced to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after an enthralling and fascinating contest against Denmark in Dortmund.

The hosts started as the more aggressive side and thought they had the opener when Nico Schlotterbeck headed home in the fourth minute. That goal was ruled out for an infringement in the box and Denmark had a reprieve.

They strengthened in the first half and were in the ascendancy when a rare thunderstorm called proceedings to a halt due to dangerous lightning. The match resumed and the team went into the break all square.

Denmark then struck first in the second half as Jaochim Andersen finished of a fortunate set piece routine only for VAR to rule him offside. Mere minutes later, Andersen was penalised for handling the ball in his own box and gave away a penalty.

Kai Havertz slotted it past Kasper Schmeichel and the hosts never looked back. Jamal Musiala added a second with a superb curling strike and Germany secured the win to reach the next round.

GOAL! Germany 0-1 Denmark (Andersen, 48’)⚽️

48 mins: Denmark win a free kick high up the pitch and work the ball into the penalty area. The ball is flicked on to Jannik Vestegaard who scrambles to turn the ball into the goal.

He doesn’t manage it but the ball squirts out to Joachim Andersen who drills a lovely shot into the bottom corner!

Germany 0-0 Denmark

47 mins: When Denmark pass the ball quickly they are a handful for Germany. Hojlund makes a run through the lines and wants the ball but Rudiger puts in a good block to stop their progress.

The Danes have grown into this match wonderfully. Germany will be starting to grow frustrated.

Second half! Germany 0-0 Denmark

Before Denmark get the match back underway, referee Michael Oliver calls over both captains and explains why there’s a pause. It seemed to be either a) a problem with the roof or b) more adverse weather on the way.

Regardless the match resumes with both teams trying to edge themselves into the lead.

Euro 2024 match between Germany and Denmark suspended as thunderstorm strikes

The Euro 2024 knockout tie between Germany and Denmark was suspended on Saturday evening as a thunderstorm hammered the stadium in Dortmund with rain, hail and lightning.

English referee Michael Oliver stopped the action after 35 minutes and took the players off the field of play with the game 0-0.

As torrential rain fell at the Westfalenstadion, puncturing the stadium’s roof with waterfalls which crashed down in the stadium below, both sets of players stood at the edge of the pitch for a few moments before being led into the dressing rooms.

Half-time! Germany 0-0 Denmark

45+1 mins: There goes the whistle to end the first half and there’s nothing to separate the teams. It’s been entertaining and fascinating for a number of reasons not least the lightning storm above the stadium.

As it stands though Denmark have effectively kept Germany at bay.

Germany 0-0 Denmark

45 mins: Chance!

Denmark should be ahead. They work the ball quickly through midfield on the counter attack. One touch passes release Alexander Bah who gets caught by Antonio Rudiger just before he gets to the box.

Bah manages to poke the ball into the penalty area where Rasmus Hojlund arrives. Manuel Neuer sprints towards the ball and gets there just as Hojlund takes the shot.

The German goalkeeper gets a body block on the effort and keeps it out!

Germany 0-0 Denmark

41 mins: Close!

Denmark work the ball across the pitch nicely and find Andreas Skov Olsen. He brings the ball into the box and slips it to Alexander Bah.

Bah looks to square the ball but gives it away. A strong press from Rasmus Hojlund wins the ball back but he’s panicked and smokes a shot into the side netting.
