From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Eden Hazard scored a superb winner as Chelsea came from behind to beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The Reds’ seven-match winning start to the season was halted after substitute Hazard fired past Simon Mignolet in the 85th minute at the end of a wonderful run.

Hazard’s goal came six minutes minutes after he helped create Emerson Palmieri’s equaliser, which cancelled out Daniel Sturridge’s 58th-minute opener.

The first of two meetings between the clubs this week, with a Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge to come on Saturday, saw Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Blues counterpart Maurizio Sarri both make eight changes to their starting line-ups.

It’s a big game for…

Gary Cahill: After announcing his intentions to leave Chelsea in January, the 33-year-old was finally thrust into action on the weekend when Antonio Rudiger picked up a knock against West Ham. Whether it’s to try and transform Maurizio Sarri’s opinion or attract suitors elsewhere, it’s an important start for the club’s former captain.

Weird /best stat…

The last six times Liverpool and Chelsea have been drawn against one another in the Carabao Cup, the winner has gone on to the final.

Remember when…

The two teams most recently met in the third round of the competition in November, 2000, when Robbie Fowler’s extra-time winner ended a 10-month goal drought and secured a 2-1 victory for the home side.
