From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Brighton beat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup third-round tie at the Amex Stadium to progress to the fourth round, where they will play Middlesbrough.

Glenn Murray's late bundled winner proved the difference on a night when VAR made its debut and was called upon for the crucial goal, to settle a debate over whether Murray handled the ball.

18' - Tomer Hemed almost opens the scoring for Brighton but his header is straight at Wayne Hennessey, who catches the ball.

If that had gone either side of the Palace goalkeeper, he would've had a big problem.

23' - Solly March cuts inside from the right wing and onto his favoured left foot but rejects a clear opportunity to shoot, instead opting to spread the ball out wide to Gaetan Bong, whose first-time cross is blocked.

March should definitely have tried his luck there.

GOAL! Brighton 1-0 Crystal Palace (Stephens)

25' - Brighton right-back Ezequiel Schelotto plays a neat ball inside to Dale Stephens, who easily skips past Yohan Cabaye before drilling a shot in at Wayne Hennessey's near post.

On the balance of play, the hosts probably deserve to be in front.

31' - Gaetan Bong delivers another superb cross into the box for Brighton but Tomer Hemed's header is poor and the ball loops over the crossbar.

Bong has been a really effective attacking outlet for Brighton so far tonight.

35' - Jose Izquierdo skips past Martin Kelly down the left wing but his cut-back for Tomer Hemed is far too powerful and the ball just bounces off the striker and goes behind for a goal-kick.

Palace have been really poor so far tonight.

38' - Bakary Sako gets on the end of James McArthur's through ball before delivering a teasing low cross that flashes across the face of the six-yard box.

Palace would be level right now if Andros Townsend had gambled on that one at the far post.

45' - We'll have a minimum of three added minutes at the end of the first half.

Half-time - Brighton 1-0 Crystal Palace

Andre Marriner brings the first half to a close and Brighton lead at the break through Dale Stephens' 25th-minute strike.

It's not been a great game but the hosts are certainly good value for their lead.
