From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Monchengladbach coach Andre Schubert has his say...

"We're not going to try and pull something extraordinary out of the hat," he said.

"It's about looking to contain Man City as best we can.

"We are playing against one of the best teams, with the potential to get to the semi-finals or the final of the Champions League. We're huge underdogs going into this game, we're aware of that."

So what do the stats say?

  • The teams are facing each other in the group stages of the CL for the second consecutive season. City have won all three encounters.
  • City have failed to keep a clean sheet in their five away games against German opposition in the Champions League (W2 L3).
  • Monchengladbach have won only one of their five home games in the Champions League (D2 L2), 4-2 against Sevilla in November 2015.
  • City have not won any of their past four away Champions League games (D2 L2). This season, they have conceded seven goals in two away games.

Pep Guardiola has his say...

“Every day is a new day. The day we won at the Ethiad against Gladbach, if we had to play the day after, it would have been a new game. So. Every game is completely different. But we will try to play good.”

“We have to try to take our first chance to qualify, so we can concentrate on the Premier League.”

The players are out on the pitch, we're moments away from kick-off!

1 min: And there's the whistle! Game on!

Samuel Lovett23 November 2016 19:45

2 min: An eventful two minutes as City casually string the ball across their back line, taking their time with no real desire to push on. It's switched from left to right with a cross-field ping but Navas is met by the Borussia defence and opts to recycle. As you were.

Samuel Lovett23 November 2016 19:47

4 min: First corner of the match for the City following Navas' blocked delivery on the right. It's pinged in and Otamendi rises highest to meet the ball at the near post but he struggles to get over it with the ball bouncing off the top of his head. Goal kick.

7 min: A chance for the Germans! Raffael plays an incisive pass inside the City final third that cuts in between the visitors' centre-backs and sets up Johnson for a shot on goal. Positioned from the right-hand side edge of the City box, with Stones bearing down his neck, he swipes at the ball which fizzes across to Bravo's right.

10 min: A second corner for City but Sommer reads it well this time and rushes from his line to punch the ball clear.

Samuel Lovett23 November 2016 19:55

12 min: With three simple passes, City work the ball through the centre of the park to Navas on the right flank. The winger pumps in his delivery to the edge of the box but it's just out of reach for Aguero, enabling the German defence to pounce on the loose ball.
